{"id":1624,"date":"2012-04-23T08:32:25","date_gmt":"2012-04-23T07:32:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=1624"},"modified":"2012-04-23T08:32:25","modified_gmt":"2012-04-23T07:32:25","slug":"esd-is-misunderstood-in-the-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2012\/04\/23\/esd-is-misunderstood-in-the-uk\/","title":{"rendered":"ESD is misunderstood in the UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A recent report for UNESCO that looked at the main lessons learned from ESD practice in the UK concluded that \"<em>ESD is misunderstood<\/em>.\"\u00a0 This seems entirely the wrong\u00a0way round to me: <em>People find ESD\u00a0impossible to understand<\/em>, more like.<\/p>\n<p>Here's a 7 point plan to ensure that any educational misadventure ends up like this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>1. Think up a new concept using at least 3 multi-syllable words.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>2.\u00a0Make sure the phrase contains at least one abstract noun \u2013 \u00a0two for preference.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>3. The noun(s) should have confused and contested meanings and already be in everyday use in potentially unhelpful ways.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>4.\u00a0Use arcane language to describe the concept so that its usefulness is not immediately clear to potential stakeholders.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>5.\u00a0Establish vague goals in order to make evaluation impossible.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>6.\u00a0Create, and then reify, a new acronym to go with all this.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>7.
