{"id":1797,"date":"2012-05-14T18:19:52","date_gmt":"2012-05-14T17:19:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=1797"},"modified":"2012-05-14T18:19:52","modified_gmt":"2012-05-14T17:19:52","slug":"neither-sermons-nor-silence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2012\/05\/14\/neither-sermons-nor-silence\/","title":{"rendered":"Neither sermons nor silence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Green Alliance <a href=\"http:\/\/greenallianceblog.org.uk\/2012\/05\/14\/should-the-government-advertise-the-green-switchover\/\">blog<\/a> has an interesting post today titled:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Should the [UK] government advertise the \u201cgreen\u00a0switchover\u201d?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>'Advertise' here means <em>communicate<\/em> to a generally unaware public through TV in order\u00a0to increase adoption of green initiatives such as the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.decc.gov.uk\/en\/content\/cms\/tackling\/green_deal\/green_deal.aspx\">Green Deal<\/a><\/em> energy efficiency scheme, the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.decc.gov.uk\/en\/content\/cms\/tackling\/smart_meters\/smart_meters.aspx\">smart meter<\/a><\/em> rollout, and the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.decc.gov.uk\/en\/content\/cms\/meeting_energy\/Renewable_ener\/incentive\/incentive.aspx\">renewable heat<\/a> incentive<\/em>, all of which are part of its energy (reduction) strategy.<\/p>\n<p>A bit of a no-brainer, you might think, given our understanding of how difficult it is to reach parts of the public, especially those who've not benefitted from ESD. \u00a0Trouble is, HMG has a bit of a downer on advertising (part of its austerity strategy). \u00a0However, as the Green Alliance\u2019s new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.green-alliance.org.uk\/uploadedFiles\/Publications\/reports\/Neither%20sermons_FW.pdf\">report<\/a>, <em>Neither sermons nor silence: the case for national communications on energy use<\/em>, predicts, unless there's a co-ordinated approach to raising awareness the government is unlikely to generate the levels of take up it both hopes for and needs. \u00a0As Alastair Harper, senior policy adviser at Green Alliance, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt comes down to basic economics. \u00a0If you spend a lot of money making these policies happen but then don\u2019t tell people about them you are not getting an optimal return on your investment.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Quite so. \u00a0But it's not just a question of telling people, is it? \u00a0How about getting them talking about it? \u00a0What's the government strategy for doing this?<\/p>\n<p>The report itself is a valuable review of past approaches to this sort of issue across sectors and interests. \u00a0It will likely be valuable for this, whatever government eventually does or doesn't do.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Green Alliance blog has an interesting post today titled: Should the [UK] government advertise the \u201cgreen\u00a0switchover\u201d?
