{"id":1926,"date":"2012-06-19T08:44:41","date_gmt":"2012-06-19T07:44:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=1926"},"modified":"2012-06-19T08:44:41","modified_gmt":"2012-06-19T07:44:41","slug":"equal-opportunities-in-argyll-bute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2012\/06\/19\/equal-opportunities-in-argyll-bute\/","title":{"rendered":"Equal opportunities in Argyll and Bute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As Andy Stables has noted, the political slogan,\u00a0<em>equal opportunities \u2013 <\/em>rather like the idea of sustainable development \u2013 is something of a contradiction, but that doesn't stop its being put into practice in some odd contexts. \u00a0A recent egregious example was by Council apparatchiks in Argyll &amp; Bute when they decided that Martha Payne's blog, <a href=\"http:\/\/neverseconds.blogspot.co.uk\">NeversSconds<\/a>, needed to be silenced because it didn't give every school meal an equal chance to be seen by the blog's readers \u2013 Martha just showed pictures of the meals that she ate on her prison-style plastic tray.<\/p>\n<p>The humourless Council <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/education\/primaryeducation\/9333622\/Neverseconds-food-blog-row-how-the-council-changed-its-tune.html\">said<\/a> ...<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The Council has directly avoided any criticism of anyone involved in the \u2018never seconds\u2019 blog for obvious reasons despite a strongly held view that the information presented in it misrepresented the options and choices available to pupils however this escalation means we had to act to protect staff from the distress and harm it was causing. \u00a0In particular, the photographic images uploaded appear to only represent a fraction of the choices available to pupils, so a decision has been made by the Council to stop photos being taken in the school canteen.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As they couldn't actually ban Martha's blog, Council officers stopped her from taking pictures inside her school canteen to use in the blog. \u00a0Brilliant!
