{"id":2067,"date":"2012-08-02T10:34:35","date_gmt":"2012-08-02T09:34:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=2067"},"modified":"2012-08-02T10:34:35","modified_gmt":"2012-08-02T09:34:35","slug":"unapproved-strawberry-jam-alert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2012\/08\/02\/unapproved-strawberry-jam-alert\/","title":{"rendered":"Unapproved strawberry jam alert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a press release dated 30th July 2012, the <em>Office for Strictures and Control on Food and Fodder<\/em> ( <em><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2010\/08\/02\/the-quality-of-strawberry-jam-if-not-strained\/\">Ofscoff<\/a><\/em> ) <strong>[1]<\/strong> ordered the confiscation of strawberry jam recently and illicitly produced by unqualified persons at an unregistered site somewhere in the Bath area. \u00a0A spokesperson for Ofscoff, Dr Isabella McTarry-Wilson, said<\/p>\n<p>\"This jam must be tracked down, rounded up, and eliminated.\u00a0 It breaches all norms and expectations in relation to jam (strawberry-type [red])<strong> [2]<\/strong> in that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[a]\u00a0 the number of strawberries used per pot exceeds the Ofscoff norm<\/p>\n<p>[b]\u00a0 it contains the wrong sort of berries for this sort of normalised jam-type food; they are much too large<\/p>\n<p>[c]\u00a0 the berries have failed to disintegrate in the proper way during the cooking, and can still be recognised as berries in the jar<\/p>\n<p>[d]\u00a0 when opened and applied to bread, the jam fails to run off in the designated internationally-approved fashion, or drip onto tables and trousers according to regulation<\/p>\n<p>[e]\u00a0\u00a0the jam actually tastes of strawberries\".<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr McTarry-Wilson\u00a0conceded that the last point was not strictly a contravention of norm, expectation (or regulation), but she added<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\"Clearly whilst some taste is regretably permissable, this jam does not conform to the spirit of strawberry jam making today in that Ofscoff's standard <em>residual taste per berry<\/em> <em>quotient<\/em> has been grossly exceeded\".<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What made matters worse, McTarry-Wilson\u00a0said, was that people actually seemed to enjoy it, adding:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\"It is in no one's interests to have food available that people like.\u00a0 Suppose everyone wanted that kind of food?\u00a0 Where would we be then?\u00a0 Ofscoff is on high alert, and these irresponsible people should not think that they will get away with it.\u00a0 We have inspectors combing the region as we speak. \u00a0We are watching markets and corner shops;
