{"id":2138,"date":"2012-07-19T08:23:05","date_gmt":"2012-07-19T07:23:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=2138"},"modified":"2012-07-19T08:23:05","modified_gmt":"2012-07-19T07:23:05","slug":"rio-%c2%b1-20","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2012\/07\/19\/rio-%c2%b1-20\/","title":{"rendered":"Rio \u00b1 20"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In his latest blog <a href=\"http:\/\/transformativelearning.nl\/2012\/07\/18\/green-economy-business-as-usual-esd-education-as-usual-rio-20-or-rio-20\/\">posting<\/a>, Arjen Wals shares some of his recent experiences at the hands of UNECO editors, and looks back both at Rio+20, and Rio -20 in Stockholm. \u00a0He notes ...<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>I was invited to Rio to present the review of the UN DESD which UNESCO commissioned me to write up in the report\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/arjenwals.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/07\/2012-desd-full-length-report.pdf\">2012 DESD Full-length Report<\/a>\u201d.\u00a0 Basically there are three reports: the one I submitted to UNESCO, the full report as edited and authorized by UNESCO and an abridged, glossy version for policy-makers that contains a selection of texts from the full report made by UNESCO\u2019s ESD section. \u00a0Some of the rough edges and critical notes of the original report were taken out somewhat to my dismay.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dismay? \u00a0I suspect his concerns are understated.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I'd be the first to admit that the readability (and sometimes sense) of anything I write can always be improved (and I have ~3 people whose judgement I invariably accept without another thought). \u00a0That sort of editing is welcome <em>and<\/em> necessary. \u00a0However, that's not what Arjen is talking about here. \u00a0He has experienced something quite different and which is always unwelcome and testimony to a failure of process.<\/p>\n<p>What a pity that UNESCO doesn't have the confidence to face up to a bit critical comment! \u00a0How much more seriously we'd all take it, the Decade, and maybe even ESD.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In his latest blog posting, Arjen Wals shares some of his recent experiences at the hands of UNECO editors, and looks back both at Rio+20, and Rio -20 in Stockholm. \u00a0He notes ...
