{"id":2280,"date":"2012-09-12T08:12:41","date_gmt":"2012-09-12T07:12:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=2280"},"modified":"2012-09-12T08:12:41","modified_gmt":"2012-09-12T07:12:41","slug":"the-millers-tale-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2012\/09\/12\/the-millers-tale-2012\/","title":{"rendered":"The miller's tale \u2013 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I spent an enjoyable day in the fresh air at the splendid Weald &amp; Downland <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wealddown.co.uk\">museum<\/a> in Hampshire in August. \u00a0If you've not been, and are passing (no unnecessary carbon please!), you might find its collection of rescued buildings from England's past rather absorbing, and its encouragement of craft skills, inspiring, perhaps. \u00a0Whilst there, I met a miller, some 14 years on from my first miller-encounter, although in very different circumstances. \u00a0We talked about wheat, and the power to grind it, as he supervised the working of the reconstructed overshot water mill.<\/p>\n<p>The visitor is taught (it's a diffuse sort of pedagogy) that it's water power (gravity and all that) which grinds the grain. \u00a0There are two ponds with water flowing from the upper to the lower over the wheel. \u00a0As there was no obvious in-flow of water into the upper pond, I wondered how the water level (and head of water) was maintained. \u00a0So, I asked the miller. \u00a0He said they relied on rain, and, when pressed, said that, if needed, they could electrically pump water from the lower to the upper pond. \u00a0There followed a conversation about the potential of archimedean <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/search?q=archimedean+screws&amp;hl=en&amp;client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;prmd=imvns&amp;tbm=isch&amp;tbo=u&amp;source=univ&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=ZVI7UN_tD83s0gWO84DoAw&amp;ved=0CDUQsAQ&amp;biw=1473&amp;bih=785\">screws<\/a>, and I entertained visions of visitors having a go \u2013 though the museum's shire horses seem a more reliable bet.<\/p>\n<p>The point of all this is to wonder what sort of (environmental) education is this. \u00a0Is it a (slightly) dishonest one? \u00a0Or doesn't it matter if the whole story isn't told? \u00a0Still pondering all this, but I'm pleased to record that the bread we made with the flour was wonderful.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I spent an enjoyable day in the fresh air at the splendid Weald &amp; Downland museum in Hampshire in August. \u00a0If you've not been, and are passing (no unnecessary carbon please!), you might find its collection of rescued buildings from...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-2280","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2280","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=2280"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2280\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2280"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2280"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=2280"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
