{"id":2420,"date":"2012-10-13T10:27:21","date_gmt":"2012-10-13T09:27:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=2420"},"modified":"2012-10-13T10:27:21","modified_gmt":"2012-10-13T09:27:21","slug":"wroughting-away","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2012\/10\/13\/wroughting-away\/","title":{"rendered":"Wroughting away"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At a Food Growing in Schools Task Force conference the other week, there was something of a minor spat about the 3Rs, and the word \"wroughting\", a concept I first came across in the context of Industry Year, in 1986. \u00a0Was it, or wasn't it, one of the original Rs? \u00a0This is Christopher <a href=\"http:\/\/creative-blueprint.co.uk\/thinkpieces\/item\/reading-wroughting-arithmetic\">Frayling<\/a> ...<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The three Rs of reading, writing and arithmetic are really, in terms of fundamental skills, the two Rs of reading and writing (literacy) and arithmetic (numeracy). \u00a0There is and was a third R and it is called wroughting. \u00a0Reading, wroughting, arithmetic. \u00a0Literacy, creativity through making, numeracy. \u00a0The basis of any well-rounded education. \u00a0Educationalists have written a lot about this, since the days of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Morris\">William Morris <\/a>and co: the intelligence of feeling, the psycho-genetic educational principle, experiential learning, ways of enhancing motivation for the more practically-minded students and so on. \u00a0And yet, in hard times, all this is forgotten or dismissed as trendy theorising.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He goes on ...<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Well, it certainly wasn\u2019t theoretics with me. \u00a0I can still vividly remember the moment, when I was just seven years old, when I successfully produced a piece of multi-coloured weaving on a loom under the supervision of the elderly lady who was teaching us. \u00a0The sense of achievement. \u00a0The sense that intention could actually lead to realisation, learning all sorts of things along the way. \u00a0The sense that technical constraints could be reassuring. \u00a0That there were, sometimes, answers rather than just endless questions. \u00a0And where the big questions were concerned, it wasn\u2019t a question of learning what the teachers said (\u2018don\u2019t do as I do, do as I say,\u2019 said the geography master); it was a question of discovering things for oneself and thus internalising them.
