{"id":2481,"date":"2012-10-15T08:18:09","date_gmt":"2012-10-15T07:18:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=2481"},"modified":"2012-10-15T08:18:09","modified_gmt":"2012-10-15T07:18:09","slug":"school-food-us-style","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2012\/10\/15\/school-food-us-style\/","title":{"rendered":"School food US style"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Softish liberals usually think that nutritional standards for school food are an obvious social good, whereas many traditional (large L) liberals would be likely to think that parents might take more responsibility for their children's welfare than many seem to do. \u00a0This is a hot topic in England as the government has gratuitously removed the need to adhere to such standards from its favourite schools.<\/p>\n<p>There are, however, clear perils in messing with standards if you don't take student views on board\u00a0(adding in a tbs of common sense). \u00a0The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/10\/06\/nyregion\/healthier-school-lunches-face-student-rejection.html?ref=todayspaper&amp;_r=1&amp;\">New York Times<\/a> reports on the disquiet that local interpretation of the Congress's 2010\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fns.usda.gov\/cnd\/governance\/legislation\/cnr_2010.htm\">Healthy, Hunger-free Kids Ac<\/a>t\u00a0has resulted in. \u00a0It\u00a0reports Malik Barrows \u2013 a senior at Automotive High School in Brooklyn, who likes fruit but said his fellow students threw their mandatory helpings on the cafeteria floor \u2013 as saying ...<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Before, there was no taste and no flavor. \u00a0Now there\u2019s no taste, no flavor and it\u2019s healthy, which makes it taste even worse.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2IB7NDUSBOo\">here<\/a> is an entertaining, if rather over-long, video [<em>We are Hungry<\/em>] from Wallace County High School, Kansas, on the state of high school food where price and quality have gone up (a bit), and portion size (ie, the calorie count) has gone down (by considerably more). \u00a0Someone, it seems, thought that students would be ok with this. \u00a0That they are not seems unsurprising. \u00a0Couldn't happen here \u2013 could it?<\/p>\n<p>I was struck by this in the NYT article ...<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Research shows that children must be exposed to vegetables 10 to 12 times before they will eat them on their own, said William J.
