{"id":2554,"date":"2012-10-22T09:33:08","date_gmt":"2012-10-22T08:33:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=2554"},"modified":"2012-10-22T09:33:08","modified_gmt":"2012-10-22T08:33:08","slug":"esd-in-he-a-supply-or-demand-issue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2012\/10\/22\/esd-in-he-a-supply-or-demand-issue\/","title":{"rendered":"ESD in HE \u2013 a supply or demand issue?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How to \"integrate ESD into disciplines\" within HE seems a topical issue, at least amongst those who see \"promoting ESD\" as being important, as opposed, say, to changing curricula. \u00a0However, I think it's possibly (ie, probably) the wrong question. \u00a0I think I'd ask:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>How can disciplines integrate a focus on sustainability into what they do?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I think these questions can be rephrasing as:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>A<\/strong> \u2013 How [can we] integrate ESD into disciplines?<\/p>\n<p><strong>B<\/strong> \u2013 How can disciplines [themselves] develop an integral focus on sustainability?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Superficially, of course, A and B look the same, and the outcome may well be of the same form and structure, but they start from different positions, and, in the way that I have set them out here, the development force is differently placed:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In <strong>B<\/strong>, the locus of the activity is the discipline itself, and the process if one of absorption and assimilation, and the volition lies with those responsible for the discipline; it looks like an organic growth model.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>A<\/strong>, however, the volition seems to be external (those promoting ESD) and the process seems one of penetration; it resembles an infection model.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, <strong>A<\/strong> takes ESD seriously (and sees this as a supply-side issue); <strong>B<\/strong> takes the discipline seriously (recognising that it's really a demand-side issue). \u00a0Both say they take the learner seriously, but this seems questionable.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How to \"integrate ESD into disciplines\" within HE seems a topical issue, at least amongst those who see \"promoting ESD\" as being important, as opposed, say, to changing curricula. \u00a0However, I think it's possibly (ie, probably) the wrong question. \u00a0I...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-2554","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2554","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=2554"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2554\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2554"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2554"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=2554"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
