{"id":268,"date":"2010-08-25T17:46:21","date_gmt":"2010-08-25T16:46:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=268"},"modified":"2010-08-25T17:46:21","modified_gmt":"2010-08-25T16:46:21","slug":"to-sustainability-and-beyond-inspecting-and-reporting-on-progress-in-sustainable-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2010\/08\/25\/to-sustainability-and-beyond-inspecting-and-reporting-on-progress-in-sustainable-development\/","title":{"rendered":"To Sustainability and beyond: inspecting and reporting on progress in sustainable development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is the title of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ofsted.gov.uk\/Ofsted-home\/Forms-and-guidance\/Browse-all-by\/Other\/General\/To-sustainability-and-beyond-inspecting-and-reporting-on-progress-in-sustainable-development\">new publication<\/a> from Ofsted. \u00a0\u00a0The document is commendably brief \u2013 and I note that its focus is on\u00a0<em>sustainability \/ sustainable development<\/em>, not ESD, which probably explains some of the lack of emphasis on learning, and the lack of focus on the need to encourage and enable critical understanding. \u00a0Ofsted will, no doubt, say that this is implied in : \"appropriate knowledge, skills, understanding and values to participate in\u00a0decisions ... \", but it's only 'there' if you already know it should be.<\/p>\n<p>Then there's\u00a0\"<em>Sustainable development is the name given to the process of <\/em><em>developing our society to move from where we are now to a state of <\/em><em>sustainability<\/em>\" \u00a0as I don't know anyone who seriously believes in \"a state of sustainability\". \u00a0Just as golden ages never existed in the past, they cannot do so in the future. \u00a0In the same vein, we have: \"<em>Undertaking sustainable development and achieving sustainability<\/em>\". \u00a0\u00a0Here \"...\u00a0<em>and becoming more sustainable<\/em>\" would have been the better idea \u2013 or \"...\u00a0<em>less unsustainable<\/em>\". \u00a0This conceptual misunderstanding is found throughout the document which is a pity as it may mislead (or confuse) some schools. \u00a0This sits oddly when compared to the Ofsted\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ofsted.gov.uk\/Ofsted-home\/Forms-and-guidance\/Browse-all-by\/Education-and-skills\/Schools\/Supplementary-guidance-and-resources-for-inspectors\">briefing<\/a> for section 5 inspectors on sustainable development which has a more clearer understanding of \u00a0these ideas.<\/p>\n<p>It is also a pity that the report isn't explicit about the opportunity for critical, open-minded \/ open-ended, student\u00a0engagement \u00a0and\u00a0learning that ALL the various school foci on sustainable development bring \u2013 with the need to integrate what happens across campus \/ community and curriculum, and the imperative of helping young people make sense of it all. \u00a0Again, I'm sure Ofsted will say that it's implied, but ... . \u00a0 A missed opportunity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the title of a new publication from Ofsted. \u00a0\u00a0The document is commendably brief \u2013 and I note that its focus is on\u00a0sustainability \/ sustainable development, not ESD, which probably explains some of the lack of emphasis on learning,...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-268","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/268","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=268"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/268\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=268"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=268"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=268"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
