{"id":2924,"date":"2013-09-02T08:14:47","date_gmt":"2013-09-02T07:14:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=2924"},"modified":"2013-09-02T08:14:47","modified_gmt":"2013-09-02T07:14:47","slug":"new-entry-in-the-devils-dictionary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2013\/09\/02\/new-entry-in-the-devils-dictionary\/","title":{"rendered":"New entry in the Devil's Dictionary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Through editorial oversight, the original <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedevilsdictionary.com\/\">Devil's Dictionary<\/a> entry for <em>quality assurance<\/em> was omitted<em>. <\/em>Happily, this can now be put right.<\/p>\n<p>Ambrose Bierce's original preface to this essential book of reference can be found in Richard Gingras' <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardgingras.com\/devilsdictionary\">Introduction<\/a>. \u00a0Though Bierce stressed the significance of cynicism within the book, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Devil's_Dictionary\">Wikipedia<\/a> describes it as a satire that \u201coffers reinterpretations of terms in the English language, lampooning cant and political doublespeak, as well as other aspects of human foolishness and frailty\u201d, which seems spot on, and very necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Here's the missing entry ...<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #070c2f;font-weight: bold\"><em><span style=\"color: #000080\">Quality Assurance<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #070c2f\"><em><span style=\"color: #000080\">A regime forced on universities by politicians that has nothing to do with either quality or assurance<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #070c2f\"><em><span style=\"color: #000080\">A process to establish minimum standards and ensure they are not exceeded<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #070c2f\"><em><span style=\"color: #000080\">A system that discourages deviations from norms, particularly those masquerading as creativity.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Through editorial oversight, the original Devil's Dictionary entry for quality assurance was omitted.
