{"id":3052,"date":"2013-01-14T10:04:50","date_gmt":"2013-01-14T10:04:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=3052"},"modified":"2013-01-14T10:04:50","modified_gmt":"2013-01-14T10:04:50","slug":"ayrshire-children-miss-out-on-esd2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2013\/01\/14\/ayrshire-children-miss-out-on-esd2\/","title":{"rendered":"Ayrshire children miss out on ESD2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A rather inevitable story in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/earth\/energy\/windpower\/9798648\/Wind-farm-company-targets-children-to-drum-up-support-for-more-turbines.html\">Telegraph<\/a> at the weekend which shows the wind industry adopting fairtrade tactics in using children to urge their parents to pressure the local council to give the ok to wind farm development.<\/p>\n<p>The story begins ...<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Primary pupils in North Ayrshire were handed plans, seemingly written by a developer, encouraging their parents to back a planning application for an extension to a wind farm in the area. \u00a0The letter contained a section for parents\u2019 signatures at the bottom and was addressed to the local council\u2019s planning department. <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Oddly, all this seems to have had the blessing of the Council:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Critics yesterday expressed their anger at both the developer and SNP-run North Ayrshire council for allowing wind farm \u201cpropaganda\u201d in the classroom but the local authority claimed the letters were \u201cdirectly relevant\u201d to the pupils\u2019 school work.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The letter in question says ...<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI am writing to support the planning application made by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.communitywindpower.co.uk\/projects\/information.asp?ProjectID=20\">Community Windpower Ltd<\/a> to construct the Millour Hill (wind farm) extension. \u00a0I believe we should explore all forms of renewable energy in order to avoid the threat climate change poses. \u00a0The wind farm will generate clean, green electricity, which will contribute to the Government\u2019s renewable energy targets. \u00a0As a supporter of renewable energy, I fully support the planning application and hope North Ayrshire Council will too.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And the Council itself is reported as saying ...<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Pupils at the Dalry schools have been involved with projects related closely to the environment and sustainable energy and the distributed information was directly relevant to their school work.\u00a0 Neither of the schools are in any way endorsing the plans and are simply distributing information to the community.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Umm!<\/p>\n<p>I wonder if there's an embryonic\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2012\/06\/19\/equal-opportunities-in-argyll-bute\">Martha Payne<\/a> in Dalry ...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A rather inevitable story in the Telegraph at the weekend which shows the wind industry adopting fairtrade tactics in using children to urge their parents to pressure the local council to give the ok to wind farm development.
