Promise<\/em>, which took place in Gotland, Sweden, in October 2012. \u00a0The conference was organized by the Swedish International Centre of Education for Sustainable Development (SWEDESD) and Gotland University, and brought together 120 ESD policy, research and practice experts from 35 countries.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3108\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3108\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3108\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2013\/01\/23\/unfolding-the-power-of-esd-lessons-learnt-and-ways-forward\/report_group-3\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3108\" src=\"http:\/\/bathblogs.wpengine.com\/edswahs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2013\/01\/Report_group2-300x144.jpg\" alt=\"Some familiar faces on the conference trail\" width=\"300\" height=\"144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2013\/01\/Report_group2-300x144.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2013\/01\/Report_group2.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3108\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some familiar faces on the conference trail<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The report aims to inspire and inform international, national and local efforts to elaborate and accelerate ESD around the world.\u00a0 Its authors, Jeppe L\u00e6ss\u00f8e and Frans Lenglet, write:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe world needs to permeate ESD, while ESD needs to permeate the world. \u00a0In the coming \u00a0years ESD should go transboundary in order to unfold, to enhance its traction, to extend its influence and to become more inclusive.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The report makes four main recommendations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">Involve ESD<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333333\">ESD can facilitate dialogue and learning on critical sustainable development issues.\u00a0 ESD should be conducted in more open and inclusive ways.\u00a0 Transboundary partnerships and governance structures are necessary to give ESD more traction.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">Expand ESD<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Link ESD to the Convention on Biological Diversity. \u00a0ESD should address the global health risks.\u00a0 Efforts to promote green skills through Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) should be acknowledged and integrated into ESD. \u00a0Early Childhood ESD should be part of the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">Use ESD to reorient education<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333333\">ESD addresses the quality dimension of the Education for All (EFA) agenda.\u00a0 UNESCO should enhance the dialogue and concrete connections between the Education for All (EFA) initiative and ESD.\u00a0 Ministries of Education and other authorities should use ESD to strengthen the quality of edu\u00adcational programs and strategies.\u00a0 There is a strong need for following up official national SD and ESD policies, in order to help scaling up and spreading innovative practices.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333\">Make ESD policy context-sensitive<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333333\">A process of mediation is needed to translate and adapt general aims and principles to meaningful and supportive policy at the local level.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I was invited to this meeting but couldn't go. \u00a0So, I'm now wondering what I missed. \u00a0Judging by the recommendations, not very much, as they seem derivative, at best. \u00a0But then, I wasn't there. \u00a0So, I probably missed nuances and insights, and was certainly denied the wisdom of the late-night bar. \u00a0Nor, of course, was I able to contribute. \u00a0But I note the usual problem of reification: writing (and hence thinking) about ESD as if it were an end in itself (\"<em>The world needs to permeate ESD<\/em>\"); thinking that it's ESD than needs to change, as opposed to education, and thinking about education. \u00a0I note that there were policy folk there, so maybe their thinking was stimulated, and actions provoked once they were safely home. \u00a0Shall we ever know, I wonder?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unfolding the Power of ESD \u2013 Lessons Learned and Ways Forward reports on the conference The Power of ESD \u2013 Exploring Evidence &amp;
