{"id":3568,"date":"2013-04-10T08:34:10","date_gmt":"2013-04-10T07:34:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=3568"},"modified":"2013-04-10T08:34:10","modified_gmt":"2013-04-10T07:34:10","slug":"hefce-and-sustainability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2013\/04\/10\/hefce-and-sustainability\/","title":{"rendered":"Hefce and sustainability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I wrote about the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-admin\/post.php?action=edit&amp;post=3498\">NUS<\/a> the other day, I mentioned Hefce's <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hefce.ac.uk\/whatwedo\/invest\/funds\/cf\">catalyst fund<\/a> as this was the source of the students' windfall. \u00a0The fund has two major goals, both now focused on delivering the public and collective student interests in HE:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>To manage transition<\/strong> \u2013 to and through the new finance arrangements in HE, so that Hefce protects students and sustains important activities, thereby minimising any unintended consequences.<\/li>\n<li><strong>To support key objectives<\/strong> \u2013 to promote and enhance activities that address Hefce's and\/or the Government\u2019s key policy priorities where an innovation could lead to a step change in achievement and efficiency widely across HE.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hefce says that, in order\u00a0to achieve ...<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\"best value from our funding, investments through the fund will follow our and government priorities closely. \u00a0But investments will be based on ideas from, and negotiation with, institutions.\u00a0 To help proposals focused on supporting key objectives we have set out the key objectives and themes for the fund. \u00a0We will update this information periodically as our objectives change.\"<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3572\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2013\/04\/10\/hefce-and-sustainability\/catalyst-fund-main-image-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3572\" src=\"http:\/\/bathblogs.wpengine.com\/edswahs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2013\/04\/Catalyst-fund-main-image1.jpg\" alt=\"Catalyst-fund-main-image\" width=\"500\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2013\/04\/Catalyst-fund-main-image1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2013\/04\/Catalyst-fund-main-image1-300x120.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The fund's current <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hefce.ac.uk\/media\/hefce\/content\/whatwedo\/fundingandinvestment\/specificfunds\/strategicdevelopmentfund\/CF_strategic_themes_final.pdf\">key objectives<\/a> focus on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Student Engagement<\/li>\n<li>Enhancement of learning and teaching<\/li>\n<li>Student participation and success<\/li>\n<li>Strategically Important and Vulnerable Subjects<\/li>\n<li>Research<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge exchange<\/li>\n<li>Leadership, Governance and Management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Whilst I do not wish to criticise the catalyst fund, knowing something of how it has been used up to now, I will just note two things in the graphic:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[1] the emphasis on students and on economic growth, each a sign of the times at the Council; and<\/p>\n<p>[2]\u00a0the lack of any mention of sustainable development \/\u00a0sustainability (etc \/ etc) which do not feature as key objectives.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Actually, sustainable development\u00a0does get a mention under <em>Leadership, Governance and Management<\/em> which says Hefce will support;
