{"id":3604,"date":"2013-05-24T08:49:45","date_gmt":"2013-05-24T07:49:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=3604"},"modified":"2013-05-24T08:49:45","modified_gmt":"2013-05-24T07:49:45","slug":"when-you-think-about-sustainability-do-you-really-need-to-think-about-quality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2013\/05\/24\/when-you-think-about-sustainability-do-you-really-need-to-think-about-quality\/","title":{"rendered":"When you think about sustainability, do you really need to think about quality?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I began drafting this post at the end of March, on a train slowly making its way through that most soothing of landscapes, the Wiltshire Downs. \u00a0I was returning home from three days on the road: grandchildren (an education in themselves), and a couple of day-long meetings. \u00a0I made just one intervention at each of these,\u00a0which was restrained of me (fewer than 100 words in 5 hours, all told).<\/p>\n<p>At one, an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org\">Ellen MacArthur Foundation<\/a> team meeting, I merely asked whether \"<a href=\"http:\/\/flipped-learning.com\">flipped learning<\/a>\" required 'flipped teaching' (whatever that is), and if so, where was the CPD. \u00a0I'm still pondering the answer. \u00a0At the other meeting, the HEA ESD <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2013\/01\/24\/a-sustainable-higher-education-academy-not-quite-yet\/\">Advisory Group<\/a>, in a session about the <em>QAA, quality <\/em>and<em> ESD,<\/em> I said I was disappointed that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.qaa.ac.uk\/Pages\/default.aspx\">QAA<\/a> hadn't said to universities:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-style: italic\"><span style=\"color: #000080\">\"When you think about quality, you need to think about sustainability\"<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>... on the grounds that, in\u00a0order to make quality systems fit for purpose in the world we are entering, they need to be thought though in terms of sustainability. \u00a0This is a point I have made to QAA itself, initially as part of a national consultation on its <em>quality code<\/em>, and (endlessly, it seems) in recent <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2012\/06\/26\/qaa-and-esd-\u2013-a-serious-case-of-conceptual-clarity-disorder\">blogs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, this is <em>not<\/em> what QAA has actually said to the world. \u00a0Their's is the inverse (or perverse) point that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000080\">\"<span style=\"font-style: italic\">When you think about sustainability, you need to think about\u00a0quality\" <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But this is both\u00a0quotidian and pedestrian\u00a0as, in UK universities now, if you think about anything at all you need to think about quality, such is the grip that the quality mindset has on institutional thinking and practice.<\/p>\n<p>I regret not making a more robust challenge to these orthodoxies on the day, but I was reeling from having sat through a\u00a025 minute trading of views on which jargon was best when trying to persuade university lecturers to toe the sustainability line;
