{"id":375,"date":"2010-12-13T12:56:31","date_gmt":"2010-12-13T11:56:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=375"},"modified":"2010-12-13T12:56:31","modified_gmt":"2010-12-13T11:56:31","slug":"whats-allowed-to-count-as-citizenship-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2010\/12\/13\/whats-allowed-to-count-as-citizenship-education\/","title":{"rendered":"What's Allowed to Count as Citizenship Education?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The DfE's <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachernet.gov.uk\/teachingandlearning\/schoolstandards\/latestresearch\/newssubscription\/index.cfm?form=125\">School Research News<\/a> reports today on two school citizenship reports. \u00a0The first is \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/publications.education.gov.uk\/eOrderingDownload\/DFE-RB059.pdf\"><em>Citizenship Education in England 2001-2010<\/em><\/a><em>: young people\u2019s practices\u00a0and prospects for the future: the eighth and final report from the\u00a0Citizenship Education Longitudinal Study. <\/em>The other is \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/publications.education.gov.uk\/eOrderingDownload\/DFE-RR060.pdf\"><em>Young People\u2019s Civic Attitudes and Practices<\/em><\/a><em>: England\u2019s outcomes from the IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Study. <\/em>Both emanate from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfer.ac.uk\/index.cfm\">NFER<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div>What strikes me (on a first skim) about both reports is how limited what is to allowed to count as citizenship seems to be. \u00a0 Take these quotes:<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>Signing petitions and electing student\/ school council members were the most common forms of political participation.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Fund-raising for charities and good causes were the most commonly-reported activity, although, as they got older, there was also a notable increase in the proportions that helped in their local community.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Intentions to vote became stronger as the cohort became older.<\/div>\n<div>[<strong><em>Citizenship Education ...<\/em><\/strong> ]<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>And these:<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>Pupils in England had comparatively greater knowledge of topics such as civic participation, civic identity and civic society than of civic principles such as freedom, equity and social cohesion<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Alongside pupils in other countries, pupils in England had a low level of interest in social and political issues.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Like other pupils across the globe, pupils in England were much more likely to participate within their schools than they were to take part in community activities.<\/p>\n<p>[<strong><em>...
