{"id":3976,"date":"2013-06-09T09:54:20","date_gmt":"2013-06-09T08:54:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=3976"},"modified":"2013-06-09T09:54:20","modified_gmt":"2013-06-09T08:54:20","slug":"my-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2013\/06\/09\/my-week\/","title":{"rendered":"My Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It started in the Welsh Marches: walking, good pubs (one with a cabaret by refugees from the Hay Festival), and English song in and around Ludlow. \u00a0Hard to beat.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unep.org\/wed\/\"><span style=\"color: #000080\">World Environment Day<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I missed this, spending most of the day outside, and a large part of it tending my native hedge as it threatened to obscure my neighbours' roadway. \u00a0 UNEP did just fine without me; and I did very well without it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b007qgm3\"><span style=\"color: #000080\">Spring Watch<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I also missed all but 5 minutes of the BBC's ludicrously overblown annual focus on wildlife. \u00a0But it took only 3 minutes to confirm that the thing should be called <em>Personality Watch<\/em>. \u00a0It was just as bad as the BBC's coverage of the Chelsea Flower Show. \u00a0All you need to know can be found in a fine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/tv-and-radio\/video\/2013\/jun\/04\/arrested-development-david-bowie-video-review\">Guardian<\/a> review.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.weec2013.org\/en\"><span style=\"color: #000080\">WEEC 2013<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The clock ticks down to the 7th World Environmental Education Congress in Morocco. \u00a0I'll not be there. \u00a0The programme confirms the wisdom of that decision, as there are 26 \"<a href=\"http:\/\/www.weec2013.org\/en\/program\/keynote-speakers.html\">keynote speakers<\/a>\", not all of whom it should be said, are worth leaving the village for, let alone the country. \u00a0If they have 20 minutes each, that's a day taken up. \u00a0If they don't, what can they say? \u00a0Looks like another glorious gabfest, but at least the cous cous will be authentic, and there's royalty attending.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #000080\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unco.edu\/biology\/faculty_staff\/jurin_richard.htm\"><span style=\"color: #000080\">A visit from the Jurins<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Richard and Sylvia Jurin came to stay, en route to WEEC, with Richard pausing to give a seminar in Bath on <em>Sustainable living: what research tells us. <\/em>We had a good\u00a0multi-disciplinary turn out for a complex inter-disciplinary question. \u00a0Detailed discussion continued for some time in the pub.<\/p>\n<p>The week ended in the flowing grasslands between Avebury and Silbury Hill, absorbing the cultural landscape and speculating on the neolithic, with help from the ever-stimulating <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldheritagetrails.co.uk\">World heritage Trails<\/a>. \u00a0All quite wonderful.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It started in the Welsh Marches: walking, good pubs (one with a cabaret by refugees from the Hay Festival), and English song in and around Ludlow. \u00a0Hard to beat.
