I wrote the other day [ 22 December ] about the\u00a0Higher Education Academy's<\/a> revision of its professional standards framework, and its attempts to add a reference to sustainability within these as a new professional value. \u00a0I noted the difficulties it ran into in relation to the use of \u00a0jargon-ridden language that will not be clear to anyone not already steeped in thinking about HE and sustainability. \u00a0 The Academy has drafted the new value as:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201ca commitment to the sustainability of higher education and the concept of global citizenship\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

... which illustrates something of the problem: why should anyone commit to a concept \u2013 and a vague one at that; and to the endurance of HE (did they\u00a0really<\/em> mean that)?<\/p>\n

All this is now out for consultation, and the ever-dependable\u00a0EAUC<\/a> has a draft response on which it has asked for feedback. \u00a0EAUC is also critical of the language, but is more polite than I have been. \u00a0The ways in which the new value is\u00a0to be demonstrated by academics includes:<\/p>\n

\n

\"Knowledge of sustainable curriculum approaches, and an understanding of its implications for personal, professional practice\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

EAUC notes that \"sustainable curriculum approaches\" suffers from the same problem as \"the sustainability of HE\", and has suggested:<\/p>\n

\n

\"Knowledge of sustainability curriculum\u00a0approaches and an understanding of\u00a0...\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

... instead. \u00a0This is obviously better, but I think that a clearer way to help people think about this (if they've not thought about it before) might be:<\/p>\n

I<\/span><\/span><\/span>n relation to<\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>both what is taught, and how, <\/span>a <\/span>nuanced understanding <\/span>of how <\/span>higher education <\/span>students can, <\/span>most appropriately, <\/span>be <\/span><\/span>helped to engage critically with the <\/span>theory and practice of sustainability<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/div>\n
