{"id":5035,"date":"2013-11-13T11:01:38","date_gmt":"2013-11-13T11:01:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=5035"},"modified":"2013-11-13T11:01:38","modified_gmt":"2013-11-13T11:01:38","slug":"a-tale-of-two-surveys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2013\/11\/13\/a-tale-of-two-surveys\/","title":{"rendered":"A tale of two surveys"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I've looked at two surveys this week. \u00a0The first was that distributed by QAAHEA about its new draft Guidelines to HE institutions about SD \/ ESD (it never quite decided which this was). \u00a0The second was about the <em>National Student Survey<\/em> (NSS). \u00a0Both, of course, had QAA's fingerprints on them.<\/p>\n<p>But what a contrast. \u00a0The E(SD) Guidelines was a cheap-o affair from Survey Monkey (we're all increasingly familiar with these). \u00a0The NSS one was a sleek piece of design from <em>Nat Cen<\/em>, a social research <a href=\"https:\/\/natcen-surveys.co.uk\/p1761_web_v02\/landing2.asp\">outfit<\/a>. \u00a0I warmed immediately to the <em>Nat Cen<\/em> approach as it allowed you to see all the questions in advance which is a simple way of treating the respondent with respect. \u00a0You can, for example, see whether there's any point in your starting the survey.<\/p>\n<p>I further warmed to the NSS survey when I came to this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 11.000000pt;font-family: 'HelveticaNeueLT';font-weight: 700\">18a. (If answer to Q17=yes) Why \u2026 ?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>and then this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 11.000000pt;font-family: 'HelveticaNeueLT';font-weight: 700\">19.
