{"id":5042,"date":"2013-11-14T06:31:39","date_gmt":"2013-11-14T06:31:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=5042"},"modified":"2013-11-14T06:31:39","modified_gmt":"2013-11-14T06:31:39","slug":"bristol-fashion-but-not-very-ship-shape","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2013\/11\/14\/bristol-fashion-but-not-very-ship-shape\/","title":{"rendered":"Bristol fashion but not very ship-shape"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is what the University of Bristol says about itself in EAUC\u2019s 2013 Green Gown winners <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eauc.org.uk\/green_gown_awards_2013_winners_and_highly_comme?utm_source=EAUC&amp;utm_campaign=b71e3d1fc8-GGA+2013+winner+announcement&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_ee0ce3610d-b71e3d1fc8-285747249\">brochure<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">University of Bristol <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">Embedding Education for Sustainable Development across the curriculum<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">The University of Bristol has delivered a student led ESD initiative, reflecting its commitment to \u2018offering students opportunities to learn about issues of global importance such as environmental awareness and sustainability\u2019. \u00a0The work to date has been delivered in a unique way using student interns to lead its development. This has delivered; a full course and module baseline review identifying 23% of courses containing ESD and has led to the inclusion of ESD with student record data; mapping tools which help define ESD and engage academics, one to one assistance for academics; training courses and an ESD teaching and learning guide. \u00a0All faculties have engaged in the process with a number of schools ranging from Religious Studies to Dentistry developing ESD activity. \u00a0A key outcome of the work has been the inclusion of ESD in all faculties\u2019 Annual Programme Reviews which are reviewed by Faculty Quality Enhancement Team Chairs.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hannah Tweddell, one of two student ESD interns, said\"<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><em>\u201cThis is a great reward for all the hard work of the ESD interns and the institution; it also promotes the key role students can play in developing ESD, helping others see you can develop an effective ESD approach with limited resources and a joint approach of estates, academics and students.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u2026 and EAUC's judges commented:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><em>\"This entry was highly commended because it represented a truly integrated approach with large-scale buy-in across the University and wider sector.\u00a0 The outcomes were very positive across a variety of courses and schools.\"<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now, I don\u2019t want to knock this, because I know something of the work that Bristol does around all this, and would want to celebrate it. \u00a0However, when you look at the University\u2019s outward-looking web pages, the story is muted.\u00a0 Have a look, and see how long it takes you to find a reference to ESD.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no point looking under <strong>E<\/strong> in the A\u2013Z <a href=\"http:\/\/bristol.ac.uk\/index\">section<\/a> \u2013 or under <strong>G<\/strong> (for Green Gown \/ Green Academy), or <strong>S<\/strong>, though you will find a \u201cSustainability\u201d link which takes you <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bristol.ac.uk\/environment\">here<\/a>. \u00a0At the bottom of this page you find what looks like a piece of 3-year old text:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\"><span style=\"color: #000080\">Teaching and Research<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">The University of Bristol not only aims to operate in a sustainable way, but looks to teach and research sustainability. In 2010 a new research institute called the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bris.ac.uk\/cabot\">Cabot Institute<\/a> was set up to pull together interdisciplinary research in sustainability. In 2011 the University will be involved in a project with the Higher Education Academy (HEA) on Education in Sustainable Development called Green Academy.
