{"id":5115,"date":"2013-11-28T13:03:10","date_gmt":"2013-11-28T13:03:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=5115"},"modified":"2013-11-28T13:03:10","modified_gmt":"2013-11-28T13:03:10","slug":"the-manifesto-we-all-want-esds-just-the-thing-for-a-fair-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2013\/11\/28\/the-manifesto-we-all-want-esds-just-the-thing-for-a-fair-economy\/","title":{"rendered":"The Manifesto we all want \u2013 esd&#039;s just the thing for a fair economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is the third post focused on the \"<span style=\"color: #000080\">Enabling the future we want: education for sustainable development in the UK \u2013 a manifesto for dialogue, collaboration and action post Rio+20\". <\/span>It looks at the connection between ESD and the economy. \u00a0It begins like this:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>Emphasise the connection between ESD and the economy <\/strong><strong>\u2013 <\/strong>both the need for a thriving Green and Fair Economy, and the reassessment of the effectiveness of GDP as a global tool to measure progress, moving towards a GDP+ framework, highlight the need for ESD. \u00a0We are calling for:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000080\">Increased collaboration between governments, NGOs, business and education sectors to ensure young people are sufficiently prepared for the opportunities and challenges of a Green and Fair Economy.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366\">Recommended actions<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993366\">Professional, statutory and regulatory bodies to continue to recognise the importance of sustainability in their guidelines<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993366\">Business Schools to take an active role in the realignment of the economy with planetary boundaries and poverty eradication<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of course, we need greater connections and collaborations \u2013 but some specifics would have helped. \u00a0What is it about \"ESD and the economy\" that the authors had in mind? \u00a0As drafted, this is mostly motherhood and apple pie stuff: after all, who's going to be agin more collaboration for useful social ends? \u00a0In terms of what's being called for, however, adding the notion of a 'fair economy' to the already problematic idea of a 'green' one will cause some confusion, particularly as 'fair' is never explained. \u00a0'Fair' to whom? \u00a0To everyone, I suppose? \u00a0 But can we really all be winners, or even break even, in the process of moving to a more sustainable society? \u00a0Discuss ...<\/p>\n<p>As to the actions, it's hard to know what the second one means. \u00a0There will be much scratching of business school heads over this \u2013 if they have bothered to read it, of course. \u00a0I wonder how many business schools were consulted over this. \u00a0I suspect I know the answer.<\/p>\n<p>As to the first action: \"to continue to recognise \u2026\", well, the implication of this call for 'continuation' suggests that all's quite ok, thanks; that all these bodies are doing fine, are on track, making all the right demands, etc. \u00a0It's just a question of 'continuing'. But this is complacent nonsense. \u00a0 Or is it just poor drafting? \u00a0 My money's on the latter as the authors have form. \u00a0This section has a hurried look, as if there was never quite time to get it right. \u00a0Such a pity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the third post focused on the \"Enabling the future we want: education for sustainable development in the UK \u2013 a manifesto for dialogue, collaboration and action post Rio+20\".
