{"id":5200,"date":"2013-12-03T09:01:19","date_gmt":"2013-12-03T09:01:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=5200"},"modified":"2013-12-03T09:01:19","modified_gmt":"2013-12-03T09:01:19","slug":"sustainability-at-the-times-higher-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2013\/12\/03\/sustainability-at-the-times-higher-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Sustainability at the Times Higher Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>First, warm congratulations to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/engineering\/about\/staff\/sk2.page\">Simon Kemp<\/a> who won the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-awards.co.uk\/the2013\/awardswinners\/2013-winners\">Times Higher Award<\/a> last week for '<em>most innovative teacher of the year<\/em>'. \u00a0The judges said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Sim<span style=\"color: #000080\">on Kemp\u2019s imaginative approach to teaching, particularly by putting students in high-pressure, real-life business situations, hugely impressed our judges. \u00a0Moving away from traditional classroom-based lessons on environmental management courses, the principal teaching fellow in engineering and the environment asked students to conduct professional audits for several major organisations in Southampton, including\u00a0Southampton General Hospital, Skandia Insurance and West Quay Shopping Centre, under his supervision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">Students presented their work to the clients and received feedback on their services \u2013 inspiring some to set up their own consultancy firms on graduation. \u00a0They have worked with nearly 100 local businesses, prompting many firms to improve their green credentials. \u00a0Students praise Mr Kemp\u2019s teaching as \u201cbrilliant\u201d, \u201cextremely well designed\u201d, \u201ctotally unique\u201d and \u201cincredibly academically rewarding\u201d, and laud his dedication to providing an outstanding learning experience. \u00a0Mr Kemp has also embraced technology, filming his lectures and using \u00adTwitter to extend debates beyond the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">\u201cSimon\u2019s teaching exemplifies the best in innovative and inspirational teaching in UK higher education today,\u201d said lead judge Philippa Levy, deputy chief executive of the\u00a0Higher Education Academy. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000080\">His imaginative approach to teaching sustainability and environmental management systems challenges and supports students to learn actively and to develop crucial employability and professional skills.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>it is said that primary school teachers teach children, but that secondary ones tend to teach their subject, with the assumption that university teachers do that even more so. \u00a0Well, clearly not all do! \u00a0 Excellent stuff, Simon. \u00a0Good to see sustainability learning at the top table.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the '<em>sustainable development<\/em>' award went to the University of Greenwich. \u00a0The judges said ...<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000080\">From a shortlist full of \u201cheavyweights\u201d in the field, the judges recognised the remarkable achievement of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www2.gre.ac.uk\/\">University of Greenwich<\/a> in \u201cattaining and sustaining a standard that not just matches best practice elsewhere but introduces its own innovations\u201d. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000080\">Its winning entry was the result of three years of hard work that helped the institution to move from \u201claggard to leader\u201d in sustainable development by rising 102 places in the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/peopleandplanet.org\/greenleague\">People and Planet Green League<\/a><span style=\"color: #000080\"> to top the rankings in 2012. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000080\">Under head of sustainability Kat Thorne, the university developed a \u201cpermaculture\u201d change framework \u2013 an approach focusing on relationships aiming to minimise energy consumption, environmental damage and waste and to maximise synergy, productivity and well-being. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">The list of achievements included: a 22 per cent reduction in the university\u2019s carbon footprint compared with 2005, with a further 40 per cent cut envisaged by 2020; 200 solar panels installed in student accommodation; 100 per cent of university computers benefiting from power-down software; and achieving ISO 14001 accreditation \u2013 which provides assurance that environmental impact is being measured and improved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">\u201cThe methodology devised by the university to achieve this was particularly noted as having clear potential for use by other institutions with similar ambitions to make a step change in their sustainability performance,\u201d said judge Patrick Finch, bursar and director of estates at the\u00a0University of Bristol.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000080\"> <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>All obviously fine and commendable, but what strikes me is the absence of any mention of people in this. \u00a0It's as if all this has been done without anyone's involvement, co-operation or enthusiasm, which is unthinkable. \u00a0This is, of course, what the judges said; I'm sure the UoG cannot have made that error in its submission.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First, warm congratulations to Simon Kemp who won the Times Higher Award last week for 'most innovative teacher of the year'. \u00a0The judges said: Simon Kemp\u2019s imaginative approach to teaching, particularly by putting students in high-pressure, real-life business situations, hugely...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5200","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-news-and-updates"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5200","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=5200"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5200\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=5200"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=5200"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=5200"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
