{"id":5341,"date":"2013-12-27T10:29:21","date_gmt":"2013-12-27T10:29:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=5341"},"modified":"2013-12-27T10:29:21","modified_gmt":"2013-12-27T10:29:21","slug":"while-snow-the-window-panes-bedim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2013\/12\/27\/while-snow-the-window-panes-bedim\/","title":{"rendered":"While snow the window-panes bedim"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is\u2028 John Clare\u2019s <em><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">December<\/span><\/strong> <\/em>that speaks of simple pleasures of a child\u2019s Christmas, which, despite our more material, comfortable, and increasingly electronic times, can still make winter memorable.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000080\">While snow the window-panes bedim,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">The fire curls up a sunny charm,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">Where, creaming o'er the pitcher's rim,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">The flowering ale is set to warm;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">Mirth, full of joy as summer bees,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">Sits there, its pleasures to impart,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">And children, 'tween their parent's knees,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">Sing scraps of carols o'er by heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">And some, to view the winter weathers,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">Climb up the window-seat with glee,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">Likening the snow to falling feathers,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">In fancy infant ecstasy;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">Laughing, with superstitious love,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">O'er visions wild that youth supplies,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">Of people pulling geese above,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">And keeping Christmas in the skies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">As tho' the homestead trees were drest,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">In lieu of snow, with dancing leaves,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">As tho' the sun-dried martin's nest,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">Instead of ickles, hung the eaves,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">The children hail the happy day \u2013<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">As if the snow were April's grass,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">And pleas'd, as 'neath the warmth of May,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">Sport o'er the water froze as glass.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is\u2028 John Clare\u2019s December that speaks of simple pleasures of a child\u2019s Christmas, which, despite our more material, comfortable, and increasingly electronic times, can still make winter memorable.
