{"id":5596,"date":"2014-02-11T09:06:01","date_gmt":"2014-02-11T09:06:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=5596"},"modified":"2014-02-11T09:06:01","modified_gmt":"2014-02-11T09:06:01","slug":"ofscoff-alert-flagrant-contravention-of-taste-laws-in-bath","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2014\/02\/11\/ofscoff-alert-flagrant-contravention-of-taste-laws-in-bath\/","title":{"rendered":"Ofscoff alert \u2013 flagrant contravention of taste laws in Bath"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a press release today 11 02 14, the South West\u00a0<em>Office for Strictures and Control on Food and Fodder<\/em> ( <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2010\/08\/02\/the-quality-of-strawberry-jam-if-not-strained\/\"><em>Ofscoff<\/em><\/a> ) <strong><span style=\"color: #333399\">[1]<\/span><\/strong> ordered the confiscation of marmalade illicitly produced by unqualified persons at an unregistered site in Bath. \u00a0A spokesperson for Ofscoff, Prof Lucy Ashton, said \u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis marmalade must be tracked down, rounded up, \u00a0taken out and moved on as it breaches all norms and expectations in relation to preserves (seville-type [orange])<strong> <span style=\"color: #333399\">[2]<\/span><\/strong> in that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[a] \u00a0 actual seville oranges have been used rather than those approved by Ofscoff under its British Limits on Bitterness [BLOB ] regulations<\/p>\n<p>[b] \u00a0the oranges have failed to disintegrate in the proper way during the cooking, and can still be recognised in the jar, as oranges<\/p>\n<p>[b] \u00a0it's not on Ofscoff's approved colour spectrum, as it is far too orange<\/p>\n<p>[c] \u00a0it exceeds Ofscoff expectations in that it actually tastes of marmalade<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Prorf Ashton conceded that the last point was not strictly a contravention of norm, expectation (or regulation), but she added<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cClearly whilst some taste is regretably permissable, this preserve does not conform to the spirit of Quasi-Seville orange marmalade-production today in that Ofscoff\u2019s standard <em>residual taste per segment of orange<\/em> <em>quotient<\/em> has been grossly exceeded\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What made matters worse, Ashton said, was that people actually seemed to enjoy it, adding:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt is in no one\u2019s interests to have food available that people like.\u00a0 Suppose everyone wanted that kind of food?\u00a0 Where would we be then?\u00a0 Ofscoff is on alert, and these irresponsible people should not think that they will get away with it.\u00a0 We have inspectors combing the region as we speak. \u00a0We are watching markets and corner shops;
