{"id":5611,"date":"2014-01-30T14:26:21","date_gmt":"2014-01-30T14:26:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=5611"},"modified":"2014-01-30T14:26:21","modified_gmt":"2014-01-30T14:26:21","slug":"hefce-on-line","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2014\/01\/30\/hefce-on-line\/","title":{"rendered":"Hefce on-line"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have joined Hefce\u2019s London consultation on line, and was impressed by the ease of the technology.\u00a0 Just a click.\u00a0 If it runs out of tax-payer cash, HEFCE could sell this expertise.<\/p>\n<p>I joined just in time to see the NUS\u2019s two recent films (again) \u2013 the Welsh one, and the one about the Green Fund projects, wittily introduced by Dom Anderson.\u00a0 Then there was the Panel discussion where Dom was joined by Steve Egan (Hefce), David Pencheon (NHS), and Nigel Carrington (VC; U of the Arts).\u00a0 All men, Dom and I noted.<\/p>\n<p>Questions to the speaker panel included \u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What can we do to provide stronger and more authentic Leadership<\/li>\n<li>What enthuses VCs?<\/li>\n<li>The Student Green Fund is excellent \u2013 what are prospects for more funding?<\/li>\n<li>Should we be educating students about sustainability?<\/li>\n<li>How (and what) can academics learn from the NHS?<\/li>\n<li>What about the 2\/5 of students who don\u2019t seem to want sustainability in the curriculum?\u00a0 How can we engage them?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2026 and their comments included<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Engage the VC on their own terms, on what interests them; make them offers they cannot refuse.<\/p>\n<p>Make the Green Fund a partnership between students and the university<\/p>\n<p>Empower leadership at every level in the organization<\/p>\n<p>Make universities visible institutions of the future in terms of implementing (and then doing) solutions.\u00a0 Universities know too much and do too little, unlike the NHS which apparently knows too little and does too much.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>These are not all original ideas, of course \u2013 except to those large numbers of people who\u2019ve never thought about them before.<\/p>\n<p>After lunch, it was mostly small group work (around 90 minutes), which is pretty useless for those of us on line, as we cannot even listen in. \u00a0I did ask an on-line question:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In 2009, Hefce said this: \u201cIt remains our view that the greatest contribution that universities and colleges can make to sustainable development is through the values, skills and knowledge that students learn and put into practice.\u201d\u00a0 Why has this sentiment been omitted from the current draft document?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But will I get an answer?<\/p>\n<p>TBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have joined Hefce\u2019s London consultation on line, and was impressed by the ease of the technology.\u00a0 Just a click.\u00a0 If it runs out of tax-payer cash, HEFCE could sell this expertise.
