{"id":578,"date":"2011-05-14T18:29:29","date_gmt":"2011-05-14T17:29:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=578"},"modified":"2011-05-14T18:29:29","modified_gmt":"2011-05-14T17:29:29","slug":"the-naming-of-parts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2011\/05\/14\/the-naming-of-parts\/","title":{"rendered":"The Naming of Parts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every year, as spring arrives, and I walk along the nearby Kennet &amp; Avon canal, I feel a strong need to know the names of the huge number of plants that I see.\u00a0 Not content with their beauty and the pleasure of seeing them, and with what simply <em>is<\/em> \u2013 and, sadly, not too interested in the fine detail of the ecology \u2013 it\u2019s their naming that seems to matter.\u00a0 This always brings <a href=\"http:\/\/www.solearabiantree.net\/namingofparts\/home.html\">Henry Reed\u2019s<\/a> ironic poem to mind. \u00a0 Written in 1941, it contrasts some very natural and unnatural processes: nature\u2019s eloquence, procreation, and knowing your rifle \u2013 and shows the futility of the NAMING OF PARTS.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>To-day we have naming of parts. \u00a0Yesterday,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We had daily cleaning. \u00a0And to-morrow morning,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We shall have what to do after firing. \u00a0But to-day,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To-day we have naming of parts. \u00a0Japonica<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Glistens like coral in all of the neighbouring gardens,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And to-day we have naming of parts.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This is the lower sling swivel.
