{"id":5981,"date":"2014-04-08T06:16:02","date_gmt":"2014-04-08T06:16:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=5981"},"modified":"2014-04-08T06:16:02","modified_gmt":"2014-04-08T06:16:02","slug":"are-you-looking-for-a-global-learning-case-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2014\/04\/08\/are-you-looking-for-a-global-learning-case-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Are you looking for a global learning case study?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, if you are, and you are open-minded about globalisation, and want to help your students be the same, you might well look at this week\u2019s <em>Schumpter<\/em> column in <em>The Economist<\/em>.\u00a0 But, if you\u2019re not, and you want youngsters to share your view that capitalism and international trade are the intertwined roots of all our difficulties, then don\u2019t bother, as there\u2019s nothing there for your comfort.<\/p>\n<p>The feature of the column this week is Kenya\u2019s international flower business which now reaches from \u201cfrom seed to cellophane\u201d, and is worth over $3 billion to the Kenyan economy, directly employing around 4.5 million people<i>.<\/i>\u00a0 Of late, this has been faced with two seemingly contradictory demands from western consumers and their moral guardians: increasing demands for better value for money, and for\u00a0more corporate social responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>I won\u2019t go into all the rich detail in the column about the innovation that such western pressures result in, which you can read about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/news\/business\/21600187-forces-reshaping-one-africas-most-successful-industries-flower-power\">here<\/a>,\u00a0but it is worth repeating the last couple of sentences:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\"\u2026 the most interesting thing about the industry is the way that it is shaking up ideological certainties. \u00a0The West\u2019s demand that companies be good citizens is confounding many on the left by consolidating more power in the hands of giant agribusinesses. \u00a0At the same time it is confounding many on the right: far from choking enterprise, it is encouraging firms to become more productive and innovative.\"<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For me, this makes the story an ideal one from an open-minded, ESD2-type, educational perspective, as it's about the real economy and people's livelihoods, both here and in East Africa, and it raises lots of issues, both moral and economic to chew (or choke) on, according to your inclination.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, if you are, and you are open-minded about globalisation, and want to help your students be the same, you might well look at this week\u2019s Schumpter column in The Economist.\u00a0 But, if you\u2019re not, and you want youngsters to...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5981","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-news-and-updates"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5981","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=5981"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5981\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=5981"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=5981"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=5981"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
