{"id":5993,"date":"2014-04-29T10:25:34","date_gmt":"2014-04-29T10:25:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=5993"},"modified":"2014-04-29T10:25:34","modified_gmt":"2014-04-29T10:25:34","slug":"contradictions-at-the-heart-of-eauc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2014\/04\/29\/contradictions-at-the-heart-of-eauc\/","title":{"rendered":"Contradictions at the heart of EAUC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes, it\u2019s hard to know what to make of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eauc.org.uk\/home\">EAUC<\/a>. \u00a0 For example, it is smart enough to have persuaded the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfc.ac.uk\">Scottish Funding Council<\/a>\u00a0[SFC] to part with\u00a0\u00a3400k over 3 years to:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cdeliver support for Scottish institutions on carbon reduction and reporting. \u00a0The aspiration is to inspire further improvement and commitment from the rest of the UK and internationally.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Commenting on this, Jenny Jamieson, policy officer for the SFC\u00a0said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe Scottish Funding Council are proud to support the pioneering work that EAUC deliver and the effect that it has had in reducing carbon in Scottish universities and colleges. The EAUC are putting sustainability at the heart of the sector ensuring we have effective institutions and engaged students.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Just so. \u00a0However, in the same breath, EAUC is credulous\u00a0enough to deal\u00a0with those promoting\u00a0a multiple choice <em>sustainability literacy<\/em> test, which, it is claimed, is designed for any student enrolled in any university, anywhere, working\u00a0at any level, and studying anything at all.\u00a0 I have\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2014\/01\/24\/another-day-another-sustainability-literacy-test\">commented<\/a>\u00a0before on the foolishness at the heart of this enterprise, but it\u2019s worth repeating its\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sustainabilitytest.org\/en\/the_test#test1\">key claim<\/a> which is that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\"All of the questions in this assessment will ensure that future graduates have basic knowledge on sustainable development and both individual and organisational sustainability and responsibility.\"<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>No they won\u2019t.\u00a0 Tests don\u2019t \u201censure\u201d anything.\u00a0 Not even teaching \u201censures\u201d anything in this sense.\u00a0 Learning might, of course \u2013 on a good day. \u00a0Surely, someone in EAUC understands this.<\/p>\n<p>So,\u00a0how\u00a0to explain such contradictions. \u00a0Well, it's hard to say. \u00a0Lapses of concentration, perhaps, or maybe the organisation\u00a0has been\u00a0spending too much time in Edinburgh's New Town with the SFC, and has imbibed too freely of the spirit of RLS.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes, it\u2019s hard to know what to make of the EAUC. \u00a0 For example, it is smart enough to have persuaded the Scottish Funding Council\u00a0[SFC] to part with\u00a0\u00a3400k over 3 years to: \u201cdeliver support for Scottish institutions on carbon reduction...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5993","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-news-and-updates"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5993","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=5993"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5993\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=5993"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=5993"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=5993"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
