{"id":6015,"date":"2014-06-09T07:28:38","date_gmt":"2014-06-09T07:28:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6015"},"modified":"2014-06-09T07:28:38","modified_gmt":"2014-06-09T07:28:38","slug":"the-uk-is-no-2-in-europe-it-seems-for-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2014\/06\/09\/the-uk-is-no-2-in-europe-it-seems-for-education\/","title":{"rendered":"The UK is No. 2 in Europe it seems \u2013 for Education!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UK is No. 2 in Europe for\u00a0Education. \u00a0Well, so says Pearson \u2013 and\u00a0they should know as they seem increasingly to be running it. \u00a0The BBC <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-27314075\">reports<\/a> their latest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eiu.com\/home.aspx\">Economist Intelligence Unit<\/a> world survey and says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>These rankings are based upon an amalgamation of international tests and education data \u2013 including the OECD's <em>Pisa<\/em> tests, and two major US-based studies, <em>Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study<\/em> (Timss) and <em>Progress in International Reading Literacy Study<\/em> (Pirls). \u00a0They also include higher-education graduation rates, which helped the UK to a much higher position than in Pisa tests, which saw the UK failing to make the top 20.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Just so, and miserable school results from Wales are masked by all the other data. \u00a0The global top 10 are:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>1. South Korea<br \/>\n2. Japan<br \/>\n3. Singapore<br \/>\n4. Hong Kong<br \/>\n5. Finland<br \/>\n6. UK<br \/>\n7. Canada<br \/>\n8. Netherlands<br \/>\n9. Ireland<br \/>\n10. Poland<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The pesky Finns are up there again, ruining the \u20acuro-party for the plucky Brits, but no Germans, French, Danes, Swedes, Russians or Americans. \u00a0How nice; almost makes up for our failing, again, to win the\u00a0FIFA\u00a0world cup [NB, this is a prediction].<\/p>\n<p>There has been no comment from Mr Gove, presumably because all this success doesn't suit his reformist\u00a0agenda, where things have to be bad in order to need a white knight\u00a0riding to the rescue (ie, one M.
