{"id":6035,"date":"2014-07-15T06:10:03","date_gmt":"2014-07-15T06:10:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6035"},"modified":"2014-07-15T06:10:03","modified_gmt":"2014-07-15T06:10:03","slug":"ukip-alert-the-rise-of-the-non-native-species","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2014\/07\/15\/ukip-alert-the-rise-of-the-non-native-species\/","title":{"rendered":"UKIP alert \u2013 the rise of the non-native species"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2014\/apr\/16\/mps-warn-invasion-non-native-plant-animal-species\">report<\/a> in the Guardian 1,875 non-native species were counted in Great Britain\u00a0in 2012 \u2013 a figure increasing by 10 species a year, it seems. \u00a0282 of these have\u00a0become invasive.<\/p>\n<p>The parliamentary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publications.parliament.uk\/pa\/cm201314\/cmselect\/cmenvaud\/913\/91302.htm\">report<\/a>, <em>Invasive Non-native Species<\/em>, says there needs to be\u00a0better prevention, surveillance, monitoring and eradication measures, and new powers to kill off such\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/invasive-species\">species<\/a>\u00a0before they become established. \u00a0It seems that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jncc.defra.gov.uk\/page-1377\">existing laws<\/a>\u00a0do prohibit the release of non-native\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/animals\">animals<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/plants\">plants<\/a>\u00a0into the wild, but have never been used to prosecute anyone, and MPs warned that these\u00a0are\u00a0unlikely to provide the level of protection needed.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, we may have to wait until there's\u00a0a UKIP minister at Defra before there is decisive action ...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to a report in the Guardian 1,875 non-native species were counted in Great Britain\u00a0in 2012 \u2013 a figure increasing by 10 species a year, it seems. \u00a0282 of these have\u00a0become invasive.
