{"id":6047,"date":"2014-07-03T07:10:24","date_gmt":"2014-07-03T07:10:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6047"},"modified":"2014-07-03T07:10:24","modified_gmt":"2014-07-03T07:10:24","slug":"the-informal-the-subliminal-and-the-hidden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2014\/07\/03\/the-informal-the-subliminal-and-the-hidden\/","title":{"rendered":"The informal, the subliminal and the hidden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">I was at the university of Bristol the other day talking with their impressive ESD team<\/span>\u00a0at the students union \u2013 in one of their <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.breeam.org\">BREEAM<\/a> '<\/em><em>excellent'<\/em> buildings. \u00a0It apparently has the slowest lift in Christendom \u2013 the idea being that students (and visitors) will be nudged into walking up the stairs because it's much faster. \u00a0This was part of what the Estates team terms the 'subliminal curriculum' \u2013 a concept that I'd not come across before but one which, when you think about it, is all around us. \u00a0Cheap and frequent buses that go to where you want them to, are another example; as are strategically-placed bins for different sorts of waste recycling, although these tend to legitimise\u00a0waste, of course. \u00a0My admiration for the BREEAM 'excellent' experience was tempered a little by how hot\u00a0the meeting room was: a sweltering 27 *C, a good 10 degrees warmer than outside. \u00a0Clearly the heat wasn't sinking fast enough to the basement swimming pool.<\/p>\n<p>We talked\u00a0about how the subliminal, formal and informal curricula related to each other \u2013 and I tried (though not very well) to ask how they all mapped on to Bristol's\u00a0hidden curriculum. \u00a0Had I had more of my wits about me, I'd have asked how all their ESD stuff squared with Bristol's insatiable thirst for Asian students and their collective carbon indebtedness.<\/p>\n<p>Revealingly, I then stumbled on this:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"color: #231f20\"><em>The University of Bristol's roots date back to 1876. \u00a0Since its formation it has become one of the leading institutions among the UK's Russell Group of universities with around 13,000 Undergraduate and 5,500 Postgraduate students. \u00a0The University has a strong interdisciplinary approach and is internationally renowned. \u00a0 It is ranked in the top 30 universities globally (QS World University Rankings) due to its outstanding teaching and research, its superb facilities and highly talented students and staff.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is the blurb at the head of an advert for a senior academic post. \u00a0Although there is no specific mention of sustainability, some will no doubt say that the reference to its \"<em>strong interdisciplinary approach<\/em>\" is evidence of this emphasis. \u00a0But I think not. \u00a0That would rather be like saying that vegetables on a menu are evidence of a commitment to being vegan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was at the university of Bristol the other day talking with their impressive ESD team\u00a0at the students union \u2013 in one of their BREEAM 'excellent' buildings. \u00a0It apparently has the slowest lift in Christendom \u2013 the idea being that...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-6047","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-news-and-updates"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6047","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=6047"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6047\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=6047"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=6047"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=6047"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
