{"id":6084,"date":"2014-08-27T06:58:45","date_gmt":"2014-08-27T06:58:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6084"},"modified":"2014-08-27T06:58:45","modified_gmt":"2014-08-27T06:58:45","slug":"pandas-and-the-scottish-education-system-both-found-wanting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2014\/08\/27\/pandas-and-the-scottish-education-system-both-found-wanting\/","title":{"rendered":"Pandas and the Scottish education system \u2013 both found wanting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I watched the TV debates between the YES and NO campaigns for the break up of the UK out of a sense of duty \u2013 in part to see how many mentions\u00a0sustainability got.<\/p>\n<p>Well, I heard\u00a0two \u2013 sort of.<\/p>\n<p>First, there was Salmond's much repeated\u00a0joke about their being more pandas in Edinburgh zoo than Tory MPs at Westminster. \u00a0That is a fact; the ratio is 2 : 1. \u00a0However, as is typical of Salmond, there was another fact hidden behind\u00a0the first: of late, between 14 and 19% [typically ~17%] of people have voted conservative in Scotland in all kinds of\u00a0elections, and they now have 15 MSPs at Holyrood. \u00a0This may well continue as the Tories, whatever their faults, do know how to breed \u2013 and, unlike pandas, can mostly do so unaided.<\/p>\n<p>The only other mention I heard \u2013 and I did fall asleep at one point in the first debate, despite watching it in the afternoon \u2013 was when oil was\u00a0the focus. \u00a0The sustainability of the money from oil is key to Scotland's future, it seems, no matter how many times you spend the cash.<\/p>\n<p>Depressing stuff; but more depressing still was the standard of comment and questioning from some of the audience where credulity was much\u00a0in evidence. \u00a0And here was me thinking\u00a0that the Scottish education system was all about engendering critical thinking.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I watched the TV debates between the YES and NO campaigns for the break up of the UK out of a sense of duty \u2013 in part to see how many mentions\u00a0sustainability got.
