{"id":6090,"date":"2014-10-15T08:24:13","date_gmt":"2014-10-15T08:24:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6090"},"modified":"2014-10-15T08:24:13","modified_gmt":"2014-10-15T08:24:13","slug":"its-a-far-far-better-thing-i-do","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2014\/10\/15\/its-a-far-far-better-thing-i-do\/","title":{"rendered":"It's a far, far better thing I do ..."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Though it's hardly a Sydney Carton moment, it is a selfless gesture nonetheless. \u00a0I have given\u00a0up a place at the launch of e<em>ducation for sustainable development: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qaa.ac.uk\/en\/Publications\/Documents\/Education-sustainable-development-Guidance-June-14.pdf\">guidance<\/a> for UK higher education providers,<\/em>\u00a0so that someone whose need to learn about ESD in universities is greater even than mine \u2013 hard though that might be for some to imagine.<\/p>\n<p>It's this\u00a0Friday, October 17th, and is 5\u00a0hours long. \u00a05 hours! \u00a0Some launch; the Titanic sank in half this\u00a0time. Surely a steeper slipway could\u00a0have been found.<\/p>\n<p>The flier for the launch\u00a0says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\" ...this event provides an opportunity to hear from representatives of the key organisations involved in its development. \u00a0Speakers will introduce the guidance and outline the work that each organisation does to support higher education providers in this area.\"<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, that's why 5 hours are needed; every\u00a0key character in the drama needs time to\u00a0promote themselves and their preferred interpretations \u2013\u00a0such is the degree of competitiveness\u00a0that runs through all this.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, it will be a great success as all such QAA gatherings are required\u00a0to be. \u00a0But, how should\u00a0the more objectively-minded evaluate the\u00a0event? \u00a0Here's a suggestion using <em>Gresham's ARDR<\/em> scale:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Admirable<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 where &gt;50% of attendees knew\u00a0next to nothing about\u00a0ESD before they came<br \/>\n<strong>Reasonable<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 where &gt;25% were\u00a0in that happy state<br \/>\n<strong>Disappointing<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 where &gt;75% of those attending already know each other<br \/>\n<strong>Risible<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 where those\u00a0involved in drafting\u00a0the guidance are &gt;80% of the audience.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As for me, I'm spending the day writing a piece\u00a0comparing what this guidance says (and the emerging international critique of it) with ideas coming out of Canada and Australia. \u00a0Compelling!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Though it's hardly a Sydney Carton moment, it is a selfless gesture nonetheless. \u00a0I have given\u00a0up a place at the launch of education for sustainable development: guidance for UK higher education providers,\u00a0so that someone whose need to learn about ESD...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-6090","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-new-publications"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6090","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=6090"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6090\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=6090"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=6090"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=6090"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
