Let's grab it with both hands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Saturday, there's a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icomos-uk.org\/about-us\/events\/intangible-cultural-heritage-conference-2014\">conference<\/a> on <em>Intangible Cultural Heritage in the UK: promoting and safeguarding our diverse living cultures<\/em>. \u00a0It's at the Museum of London Docklands, West India Quay. \u00a0It's about time.<\/p>\n<p>The 2003 UNESCO <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unesco.org\/culture\/ich\/index.php?lg=en&amp;pg=00006\">Convention<\/a> defines Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) as: oral traditions and expressions, traditional craftsmanship, performing arts, rituals and festivals, knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe and social practices. \u00a0So far, and quite shamefully, the UK (like North Korea) has not signed up to the convention (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unesco.org\/eri\/la\/convention.asp?KO=17116&amp;language=E&amp;order=alpha\">160<\/a> countries have). \u00a0I blame those Defra civil servants and Tory MPs who abhor\u00a0Morris Dancing, May Poles and cheese rolling\u00a0to equal degrees.<\/p>\n<p>I'm a huge fan of the idea of Intangible Cultural Heritage which I first came across in Hong Kong's New Territories at its\u00a0rather wonderful museum of that name. \u00a0I spend hours there. \u00a0How can you have a museum devoted to the intangible, do you say? \u00a0Well, quite easily, if you have culture, heritage and imagination. \u00a0Maybe that's where we go wrong ...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Saturday, there's a conference on Intangible Cultural Heritage in the UK: promoting and safeguarding our diverse living cultures. \u00a0It's at the Museum of London Docklands, West India Quay. \u00a0It's about time.
