{"id":6178,"date":"2014-12-09T08:24:54","date_gmt":"2014-12-09T08:24:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6178"},"modified":"2014-12-09T08:25:07","modified_gmt":"2014-12-09T08:25:07","slug":"ofsteds-ukip-style-shaping-of-the-curriculum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2014\/12\/09\/ofsteds-ukip-style-shaping-of-the-curriculum\/","title":{"rendered":"Ofsted's UKIP style shaping of the Curriculum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ofsted.gov.uk\/resources\/better-inspection-for-all-consultation-proposals-for-new-framework-for-inspection-of-schools-further\">Ofsted<\/a> is proposing that the same inspection framework can apply to two-year olds, teenagers, those in FE, and those\u00a0taking apprenticeships. \u00a0This is a ridiculous idea \u2013 great for Ofsted though, which is clearly what matters.<\/p>\n<p>There is much emphasis in what Ofsted says on the promotion of British values \u2013 whatever these are in our internationalised world. \u00a0How are these different from Swedish, German, Canadian, and Australian values? \u00a0We are not told. \u00a0Is it our liking for John Major-style warm beer, hot strong tea, queuing, and old musicals on TV?<\/p>\n<p>That apart, what strikes you about what Ofsted says is how much\u00a0\"guidance\" (that is to say, specification) is set out in relation to what\u00a0schools have to do to get good grades. \u00a0It amounts to a curriculum where the inspection tail is vigouorsly wagging the school dog. \u00a0Kipling wrote about this sort of thing (sort of):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>ENGLAND'S on the anvil \u2013 hear the hammers ring \u2013<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Clanging from the Severn to the Tyne!<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Never was a blacksmith like our Ofsted King \u2013<\/em><br \/>\n<em> England's being hammered, hammered, hammered into line!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Needless to say, there is no\u00a0emphasis on sustainability \u2013 obviously caring about the rest of humanity and the biosphere is not seen as a British value.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ofsted is proposing that the same inspection framework can apply to two-year olds, teenagers, those in FE, and those\u00a0taking apprenticeships. \u00a0This is a ridiculous idea \u2013 great for Ofsted though, which is clearly what matters.
