{"id":6185,"date":"2014-12-13T08:44:24","date_gmt":"2014-12-13T08:44:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6185"},"modified":"2014-12-13T08:44:24","modified_gmt":"2014-12-13T08:44:24","slug":"climate-update-no-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2014\/12\/13\/climate-update-no-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate Update \u2013 no change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This morning's <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2014\/dec\/12\/lima-climate-change-talks-stumble-cash-emissions-cuts\">Guardian<\/a> has a gloomy update on COP20 from Lima which shows that all the usual fault lines are still in place \u2013 not enough\u00a0cash and bad faith galore. \u00a0The piece ends:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>In addition to finance, one of the biggest areas of contentious is \u201cdifferentiation\u201d in UN parlance \u2013 which countries should bear the burden of cutting emissions that cause climate change. \u00a0The US and other industrialised countries require all countries to cut greenhouse gas emissions. \u00a0That would be a departure from the original UN classification of the 1990s \u2013 which absolved China, India and other developing countries which are now major carbon polluters \u2013 of cutting their emissions.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Developing countries are suspicious that the text being developed in Lima is an attempt to rewrite those old guidelines. \u00a0\u201cI am certain that developing countries the majority of them will have a problem with the way they framed responsibility. Most developing countries will be concerned about that,\u201d said Tasneem Essop, head of strategy for WWF.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Countries are also divided over the initial commitments countries are expected to make on fighting climate change \u2013 known as \u201cintended nationally determined contributions\u201d. \u00a0Rich countries, including the US, only want to commit to carbon cuts.
