{"id":6243,"date":"2015-02-19T07:44:12","date_gmt":"2015-02-19T07:44:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6243"},"modified":"2015-02-19T07:44:12","modified_gmt":"2015-02-19T07:44:12","slug":"londons-new-crystal-palace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2015\/02\/19\/londons-new-crystal-palace\/","title":{"rendered":"London's new Crystal Palace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sustainable-business-the-crystal-partner-zone\/2015\/feb\/09\/education-for-sustainable-development-the-crystal\">Guardian<\/a> ran a piece the other day about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecrystal.org\/the-building.html\"><em>The Crystal<\/em><\/a>. \u00a0 They termed it: '<em>Children of change: empowering learners through education for sustainable development<\/em>'. \u00a0Control of the contents was not the Guardian's, but rested with The Crystal which is a sponsor of the Guardian Sustainable Business Awards and the business futures hub. \u00a0Contributors to the piece used the opportunity to promote ESD. \u00a0How odd, then, that the Crystal doesn't mention\u00a0this in its educational <a href=\"http:\/\/www.siemens.co.uk\/education\/pool\/teachers\/crystal\/downloads\/whats_in_the_zones_v1.pdf\">materials<\/a> which, more oddly still, perhaps, are located on the Siemens website. \u00a0But, hey, this is the new London whose iconic buildings are increasingly part of the globalised \u2013 or neo-liberal, according to taste \u2013 \u00a0world.<\/p>\n<p>The teacher <a href=\"http:\/\/www.siemens.co.uk\/education\/pool\/teachers\/crystal\/downloads\/whats_in_the_zones_v1.pdf\">materials<\/a> might not mention ESD, but they are all about teaching about sustainability in and through <em>The Crystal<\/em>. \u00a0They are full of references to sustainability and cities: population, urbanisation, climate change, energy, smart grids, waste, well-being, transport, and democracy. \u00a0They promise a rich experience.<\/p>\n<p>What to make of this conundrum? \u00a0Is the Crystal completely out of touch? \u00a0Or is it that they\u00a0didn't feel inclined\u00a0to use abstruse and otiose jargon that no one's heard of?<\/p>\n<p>Answers on a postcard to UNESCO ...<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Guardian ran a piece the other day about The Crystal. \u00a0 They termed it: 'Children of change: empowering learners through education for sustainable development'. \u00a0Control of the contents was not the Guardian's, but rested with The Crystal which is...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,3,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-6243","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-new-publications","category-news-and-updates"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6243","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=6243"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6243\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=6243"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=6243"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=6243"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
