{"id":6244,"date":"2015-03-26T08:40:16","date_gmt":"2015-03-26T08:40:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6244"},"modified":"2015-03-26T08:40:16","modified_gmt":"2015-03-26T08:40:16","slug":"no-publication-for-older-men","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2015\/03\/26\/no-publication-for-older-men\/","title":{"rendered":"No publication for old(er) men"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I've been\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/deeep.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/DEEEP4_QualityImpact_Report_2014_web2.pdf\">reading<\/a> <em>Monitoring Education\u00a0for Global Citizenship:\u00a0A Contribution to Debate<\/em>, but it's no publication for old(er) men. \u00a0It's near-unreadable on screen because of the PDF formatting, and you need a magnifying glass to read the paper copy. \u00a0It's (un)clearly\u00a0meant for the visually unchallenged and acute; maybe there's a message there.<\/p>\n<p>It is a publication from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/deeep.org\/\">DEEEP<\/a>, which is \"a project of the DARE Forum of CONCORD, the\u00a0European Development NGO confederation.\" \u00a0DEEEP says:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>As facilitator\u00a0of the European development education sector, DEEEP\u00a0and the CONCORD DARE Forum aim to be a driver for new\u00a0transformative approaches to development and education\u00a0through working towards systemic change and active global\u00a0citizenship. \u00a0We believe that research has a vital role to play in promoting\u00a0innovation within the field of education. \u00a0We adopt a participatory,\u00a0cross-sectoral approach to our research which\u00a0enables us to explore a range of different perspectives and\u00a0approaches to change. We regularly publish reports and articles\u00a0with academics and practitioners that stimulate innovative\u00a0thinking about new paradigms for development and\u00a0education based on global justice. \u00a0Our publications target\u00a0development education practitioners and academics, civil\u00a0society organisations and anyone interested in education\u00a0and social change.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Are you following this, because I'm not sure I am. \u00a0This report says that it ...<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\"sets out\u00a0to provide a stimulus for further thought, work and debate in the design of assessment\u00a0frameworks for an education that supports people in leading fulfilling lives in a changing, globalised\u00a0world, and in particular within the context of debates around post-2015 universal targets and indicators\u00a0that are relevant to an education for global citizenship (EfGC).\"<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u00a0addresses the following questions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What are the key differences and similarities between diverse forms of \u2018adjectival educations\u2019 that\u00a0contribute to, or generally express themselves as allied to an \u2018education for global citizenship\u2019?<\/li>\n<li>What do they contribute to an education for global citizenship?<\/li>\n<li>How, if at all, do they interpret the notion of \u2018transformation\u2019?<\/li>\n<li>What do practitioners consider to be the major challenges and opportunities for monitoring (transformative)\u00a0education for global citizenship?<\/li>\n<li>Which approaches and means of monitoring and assessing transformative education for global\u00a0citizenship appear to be feasible?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In terms of overlap and difference, the report says this:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\"The origins and key characteristics of development education, global education and global learning, human rights education, and education for sustainable development are explored, leading to statements about their commonalities and contributions to an education for global citizenship. These commonalties appear to be particularly in the areas of their shared global orientation, pursuit of personal and\/or societal transformation, active and enquiry based teaching and learning methodologies, and overlapping content.\u00a0 \u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Although the different educations may have their different histories and speciality interests there is much that they share \u2013 particularly at the broader end of their spectra. Apart from a global perspective, pedagogies and interests in transformation there are also a number of overlapping and closely related content issues.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I waded through this and came to Figure 1. \u00a0This shows DEEEP's view of these four overlapping educations, and content of mutual concern ...<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Development Education<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>global development<\/li>\n<li>inequality<\/li>\n<li>views and perspectives of the marginalised<\/li>\n<li>economic\/political reform<\/li>\n<li>education for and in development<\/li>\n<li>engagement in economic\/political change<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Global Education\/Global Learning<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>global outlook<\/li>\n<li>multiplicity of perspectives<\/li>\n<li>futures<\/li>\n<li>personal development<\/li>\n<li>education for problem solving<\/li>\n<li>engagement in shaping the future<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Human Rights Education<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>human dignity<\/li>\n<li>economic, social, political, and cultural rights<\/li>\n<li>rights and responsibilities<\/li>\n<li>education for and in rights<\/li>\n<li>engagement in actions for justice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Education for Sustainable Development<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>people-nature interdependence<\/li>\n<li>future focus<\/li>\n<li>common agendas for sustainability<\/li>\n<li>education for sustainability<\/li>\n<li>personal and societal behaviour regarding production and consumption<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>... which\u00a0looks much better as a graphic.<\/p>\n<p>You will have your own views of all this, but I think it lacks\u00a0conviction. \u00a0I'll content myself with three\u00a0comments:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>1. the contrived nature of the \"education in \/ for \u00a0...\" constructs: eg, \"education for and in rights\" \u00a0Really?<\/p>\n<p>2. the strange lack of overlap between these four segments.
