{"id":63,"date":"2009-07-10T14:01:52","date_gmt":"2009-07-10T13:01:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=63"},"modified":"2009-07-10T14:01:52","modified_gmt":"2009-07-10T13:01:52","slug":"schools-the-learning-society-and-sustainability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2009\/07\/10\/schools-the-learning-society-and-sustainability\/","title":{"rendered":"Schools, the Learning Society and Sustainability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Schools, as institutions, need to be seen as an integral part of the wider learning society with the\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">key role of supporting young people in the early stages of acquiring those wide-ranging understandings and capabilities that they will need to continue to develop in order to successfully engage with, and live in, the wider world<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In terms of sustainability, the purpose of education might be seen as engaging young people and stimulating their development of awareness, understanding, skills and capabilities in relation to living sustainably with the hope (but not certainty) that this will gives rise to social participation that can contribute to the goal of social justice and human well-being on the global scale, and bolster the integrity and resilience of ecological systems within the biosphere.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">In schools the current focus of such engagement relates, in the main, to students\u2019 personal and social activities (how they live); in universities, currently at any rate, engagement almost exclusively focuses on vocational and professional preparation (how they work). \u00a0The\u00a0following questions\u00a0seem to follow from this:<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>1. \u00a0To what extent is focusing on the sustainability of a school, as an institution, necessary\u00a0to support learning about\u00a0sustainability? \u00a0 \u00a0[ as opposed to just addressing this through what is taught ]<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>2. \u00a0To what extent do universities need to teach all\u00a0their\u00a0students about\u00a0sustainability? \u00a0 \u00a0[ as oppossed to just raising issues in those courses that are directly germane to\u00a0sustainability\u00a0]<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>... whilst noting that the first of these is not a question that tends to be asked of universities; and that the second\u00a0is not a question that\u00a0tends to be\u00a0asked of schools. \u00a0<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Schools, as institutions, need to be seen as an integral part of the wider learning society with the\u00a0key role of supporting young people in the early stages of acquiring those wide-ranging understandings and capabilities that they will need to continue...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-63","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/63","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=63"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/63\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=63"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=63"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=63"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
