{"id":6301,"date":"2015-04-20T06:59:19","date_gmt":"2015-04-20T06:59:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6301"},"modified":"2015-04-20T06:59:19","modified_gmt":"2015-04-20T06:59:19","slug":"education-manifestos-take-3-the-greens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2015\/04\/20\/education-manifestos-take-3-the-greens\/","title":{"rendered":"Education Manifestos \u2013 Take 3; the Greens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is a measure of the Green's unworldliness that it's not possible to copy from the pdf version of their election manifesto. \u00a0As a consequence, this comment has fewer bullet points than previous ones. \u00a0A good thing, maybe. \u00a0If only the Greens were campaigning on a platform to 'abolish\u00a0bullet points', I might be voting for them.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/teesnet.ning.com\">TEESNet<\/a>, a UK teacher education pressure group, the\u00a0Green\u00a0Party proposes: [i] compulsory schooling to begin at 7 years of age with 'class sizes of 20'; [ii]\u00a0Academies and Free Schools to\u00a0come under local authority control; [iii]\u00a0SATs, league tables and Ofsted to\u00a0be abolished; [iv]\u00a0PSHE to\u00a0be compulsory; and [v]\u00a0Undergraduate tuition fees to be abolished, and student debt\u00a0cancelled.<\/p>\n<p>The whole thing is\u00a0both utterly compelling and completely unaffordable. \u00a0But they don't expect to be in a position to do anything about it, so it's more a marker for less 'progressive' parties to judge themselves by.<\/p>\n<p>In my own reading of their manifesto, these\u00a0phrases stuck out:<\/p>\n<p>In relation to schools:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>[i] \"An increase in\u00a0outdoor education and physical activity so children establish an early and strong relationship with their local environment\", and <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>[ii]\u00a0\"We are determined to make schools fit for children rather than the other way round\".<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In relation to FE:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\"Prioritise training in the skills needed to build a low-carbon economy\".<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And for universities:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\"Higher Education is in crisis\".<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Well, that's as may be, but there is certainly no crisis that cannot be made much worse by politicians.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is a measure of the Green's unworldliness that it's not possible to copy from the pdf version of their election manifesto. \u00a0As a consequence, this comment has fewer bullet points than previous ones. \u00a0A good thing, maybe. \u00a0If only...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-6301","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-news-and-updates"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6301","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=6301"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6301\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=6301"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=6301"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=6301"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
