{"id":6316,"date":"2015-05-13T08:16:08","date_gmt":"2015-05-13T08:16:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6316"},"modified":"2015-05-13T08:16:08","modified_gmt":"2015-05-13T08:16:08","slug":"plymouth-comes-of-age","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2015\/05\/13\/plymouth-comes-of-age\/","title":{"rendered":"Plymouth comes of age"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was good to see Plymouth doing so well in the THE\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.co.uk\/world-university-rankings\/2015\/one-hundred-under-fifty\">Under 50s<\/a> league table published recently. \u00a0I hope\u00a0all that sustainability stuff they focus on so well has been part of this.<\/p>\n<p>The THE says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>T<em>his is a ranking of the top 100 universities under 50 years old. \u00a0It provides a glimpse into the future, showcasing not those institutions with centuries of history, but the rising stars which show great potential. \u00a0The table employs the same\u00a013 separate indicators\u00a0as the\u00a0Times Higher Education\u00a0World University Rankings, but the\u00a0100 Under 50 Rankings 2015 methodology\u00a0has been carefully re-calibrated to reflect the special characteristics of younger universities, giving less weight to subjective indicators of academic reputation<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I do wonder about that \"glimpse into the future\" conclusion. \u00a0We Brits do\u00a0reasonably\u00a0well out of all this with 15 in the top 100 (6 in the top 50). \u00a0These are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u00a0 9 Warwick<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>19 Dundee<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>25 Brunel<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>37 Plymouth<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>42 Bath<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>47 Stirling<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>65 Surrey<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>70 Aston<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>71 Hertfordshire<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>77 Herriot Watt<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>83 Loughborough<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>85 Portsmouth<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>93 Kent<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>95 Ulster<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>97 City\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Three of these are from Scotland you'll note: a good outcome, all things considering; inevitably, none are from Wales. \u00a0No one will be surprised by that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was good to see Plymouth doing so well in the THE\u00a0Under 50s league table published recently. \u00a0I hope\u00a0all that sustainability stuff they focus on so well has been part of this.
