{"id":6361,"date":"2015-06-22T06:15:06","date_gmt":"2015-06-22T06:15:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6361"},"modified":"2015-06-22T06:15:06","modified_gmt":"2015-06-22T06:15:06","slug":"another-unesco-report-another-acronym-another-decade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2015\/06\/22\/another-unesco-report-another-acronym-another-decade\/","title":{"rendered":"Another Unesco report \u2013 another acronym \u2013 another decade?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UNESCO has published a new <a href=\"http:\/\/unesdoc.unesco.org\/images\/0023\/002329\/232993e.pdf\">report<\/a>: Global Citizenship Education: Topics and learning objectives. \u00a0This promotion of <em><strong>GCE<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0begins:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00a0This publication ... is the\u00a0first pedagogical guidance from UNESCO on global citizenship education. \u00a0It is the result\u00a0of an extensive research and consultation process with experts from different parts of\u00a0the world. \u00a0This guidance draws on the UNESCO <a href=\"http:\/\/unesdoc.unesco.org\/images\/0022\/002277\/227729E.pdf\">publication<\/a> Global Citizenship Education:\u00a0Preparing learners for the challenges of the 21st century and the outcomes of three key\u00a0UNESCO events on global citizenship education: the Technical Consultation on Global\u00a0Citizenship Education (September 2013), as well as the First and Second UNESCO Fora on\u00a0Global Citizenship Education, organized in December 2013 and January 2015 respectively.\u00a0Before it was finalized, the guidance was field-tested by education stakeholders in selected\u00a0countries in all regions to ensure its relevance in different geographical and socio-cultural\u00a0contexts.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A whole page of acronyms follows, which is never good news. \u00a0My favourites were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>OSCE\/ODIHR<\/strong><\/em> Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe\/Office\u00a0for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>GIZ<\/strong><\/em> Deutsche Gesellschaft f\u00fcr Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH \u2013 and<\/li>\n<li><strong>ESD <\/strong>\u2013 you know what that is.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Curiously, the last acronym is never used in the report. \u00a0Even more curiouser, the phrase '<em>education for sustainable development<\/em>' is only used 4 times:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>in the list of acronyms (p.11), which hardly counts<\/li>\n<li>on p. 15 in a list of other <em>education 'for'<\/em>s<\/li>\n<li>ditto on p. 18<\/li>\n<li>on page 54 as \"one of the targets of the education goal in the post-2015 development agenda.\"<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Can this really be\u00a0the same UNESCO that spent 10+ years promoting ESD as the thing the world needed most? \u00a0Has there been a Paris coup that I missed? \u00a0 Surely another <em>Decade<\/em> cannot be far off.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UNESCO has published a new report: Global Citizenship Education: Topics and learning objectives. \u00a0This promotion of GCE\u00a0begins: \u00a0This publication ... is the\u00a0first pedagogical guidance from UNESCO on global citizenship education. \u00a0It is the result\u00a0of an extensive research and consultation process...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-6361","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-new-publications"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6361","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=6361"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6361\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=6361"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=6361"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=6361"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
