{"id":6392,"date":"2015-07-22T06:04:28","date_gmt":"2015-07-22T06:04:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6392"},"modified":"2015-07-22T06:04:28","modified_gmt":"2015-07-22T06:04:28","slug":"something-fishy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2015\/07\/22\/something-fishy\/","title":{"rendered":"Something Fishy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was news to me that fish don't metabolise those fabled fish oils \u2014 DHA and EPA \u2014 themselves; rather, these come via the food that the fish eat. \u00a0The oils are made by single-celled algae which then pass through the food chain before being consumed by salmon, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Thus it is that farmed salmon have to be fed on smaller fish such as anchovies if they are to work their nutritional magic on us. \u00a0About 10% of all fish caught is used for this fish food.<\/p>\n<p>But now there seems to be a way to avoid having to do this, and to avoid all those heavy metals that unfortunately lurk in these smaller fish.
