{"id":6438,"date":"2015-09-17T07:38:06","date_gmt":"2015-09-17T07:38:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6438"},"modified":"2015-09-17T07:38:06","modified_gmt":"2015-09-17T07:38:06","slug":"lotc-learning-what-not-where","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2015\/09\/17\/lotc-learning-what-not-where\/","title":{"rendered":"LOtC \u2013 learning what, not where"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The folk that run\u00a0<em>Learning Outside the Classroom<\/em> say you can improve personal development through learning outside the classroom. \u00a0Well, I suppose they\u00a0would, just as you can do this in all sorts of other ways \u2013 such as inside the classroom. \u00a0It's recent mailing to members and supporters said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>With the new Ofsted Common Inspection Framework including an increased focus on personal development, now is the ideal time to look at your learning outside the classroom (LOtC) provision and think about how you can improve pupils\u2019 personal development through LOtC activities.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Learning outside the classroom can help to develop pupils\u2019:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>spiritual awareness by developing the use of creativity and imagination in their learning through encountering a wide range of experiences and stimuli;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>moral understanding by giving real world context to moral and ethical issues to help them understand different viewpoints;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>social skills by enabling them to participate in a variety of communities and social settings;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>cultural engagement by giving them access to a wide variety of cultural experiences.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Evidence shows that LOtC can also improve pupils\u2019 attainment, improve behaviour and increase engagement with learning.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Whilst I am sure it can, but everybody says things like this and LOtC seems to be\u00a0clutching at Ofsted straws here, with\u00a0circular phrases such as \"<em>cultural engagement by giving them access to a wide variety of cultural experiences<\/em>\" are just rather pathetic.<\/p>\n<p>So, what's special about being outside? \u00a0Does LOtC know? \u00a0The last Ofsted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lotc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Ofsted-Report-Oct-2008.pdf\">report<\/a> on all this was in 2008 and now looks dated \u2013 well, it was two governments ago, which seems like a generation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The folk that run\u00a0Learning Outside the Classroom say you can improve personal development through learning outside the classroom. \u00a0Well, I suppose they\u00a0would, just as you can do this in all sorts of other ways \u2013 such as inside the classroom....<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-6438","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-news-and-updates"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6438","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=6438"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6438\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=6438"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=6438"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=6438"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
