{"id":6495,"date":"2015-11-06T07:59:40","date_gmt":"2015-11-06T07:59:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6495"},"modified":"2015-11-06T07:59:40","modified_gmt":"2015-11-06T07:59:40","slug":"my-heroes-of-the-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2015\/11\/06\/my-heroes-of-the-week\/","title":{"rendered":"My heroes of the week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Time for some relief from all the angst that usually fills these columns. \u00a0Here are the heroes I've come across this week (some rather belatedly): beacons of sense and sanity to us all ...<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Bertie\u00a0<\/strong>Pollock,<\/em>\u00a0who set fire to his father's copy of the Guardian whist he (his dad that is) was reading it. \u00a0As Bertie explained to his therapist, he'd nothing against his father, and actually quite liked him, it was the Guardian he objected to as it told people what to think. \u00a0Bertie is 5.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Bonnie <\/strong>Greer,<\/em> who told some members of the Bront\u00eb Society that they were \"malevolent lamebrains\". \u00a0Such direct speaking of truth to incompetence\u00a0is all too rare.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Tian Tian<\/strong><\/em>, who reportedly grunted\u00a0to Yang Guang: \"I hope President Xi raises the issue of why we've been imprisoned here for so long.\"<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I should say that only one of these three is\u00a0a real person. \u00a0No prizes for seeing that it's Ms Greer. \u00a0Bertie is a character in a book by Alexander McCall Smith (but there must be lots of Berties in Edinburgh) \u2013 and there are 6 more books about him. \u00a0The Chinese are, of course, the incarcerated giant pandas who featured in a Spectator cartoon. \u00a0\u00a0It's surely time to liberate\u00a0the Edinburgh Two.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Time for some relief from all the angst that usually fills these columns. \u00a0Here are the heroes I've come across this week (some rather belatedly): beacons of sense and sanity to us all ...
