{"id":6496,"date":"2015-11-19T08:35:58","date_gmt":"2015-11-19T08:35:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6496"},"modified":"2015-11-19T08:36:41","modified_gmt":"2015-11-19T08:36:41","slug":"rwl-and-outdoor-learning-for-sustainability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2015\/11\/19\/rwl-and-outdoor-learning-for-sustainability\/","title":{"rendered":"Real World Learning outdoors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2015\/10\/01\/an-unreal-world-learning-model\/\">commented<\/a> on the web-based Real World Learning [RWL] model a couple of months ago, and I wasn't impressed. \u00a0I said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\"Too clever by half, would be a kind judgement. \u00a0More muddle than model, another. \u00a0A pity, as there might just be something interesting in all the turmoil.\"<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I'm now sitting looking at a huge poster produced by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rwlnetwork.org\">RWL<\/a>\u00a0to see if this makes more sense. \u00a0My first observation is that what my poster says is not quite the same as the web-version, which is either curious or careless. \u00a0My money's on the latter.<\/p>\n<p>My second point would be that, although this is supposed to be about <em>outdoor learning<\/em> for sustainability, there is very little here that is specific\u00a0to the outdoors. \u00a0 In fact, on the side of the poster with the model writ large (there's a big blue hand in the middle), the word <em>outdoor<\/em> is used once, and there is nothing here that is exclusively about the outdoors. \u00a0In fact most of it is about learning in authentic settings which might be in or out, or even <em>under<\/em> or over for that matter. \u00a0As such, it is a potentially interesting model of learning related to\u00a0sustainability. \u00a0What a pity it wasn't flagged up as such or explained.<\/p>\n<p>But it's still a muddle. \u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0hand at the heart of the model is, it seems, a \"metaphor for outdoor learning for sustainability\", although why this is the case is neither explained nor clear.<\/p>\n<p>The hand has 5 fingers, each of which is labelled, though what these labels represent is never revealed. \u00a0The palm is about 'frames'. \u00a0Where the fingers touch the water they cause ripples which \"find synergy with each other\" and provide a \"whole that's greater than the parts\". \u00a0In this whole (or hole, perhaps) you find, they say, \"interconnected learning\". \u00a0I fear it's all babble.<\/p>\n<p>The useless poster is already shredded and in\u00a0the compost.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I commented on the web-based Real World Learning [RWL] model a couple of months ago, and I wasn't impressed. \u00a0I said: \"Too clever by half, would be a kind judgement. \u00a0More muddle than model, another. \u00a0A pity, as there might...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-6496","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-news-and-updates"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6496","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=6496"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6496\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=6496"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=6496"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=6496"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
