{"id":653,"date":"2011-06-13T10:13:37","date_gmt":"2011-06-13T09:13:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=653"},"modified":"2011-06-13T10:13:37","modified_gmt":"2011-06-13T09:13:37","slug":"hear-hear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2011\/06\/13\/hear-hear\/","title":{"rendered":"Hear Hear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/education\/2011\/jun\/10\/universities-adopt-electronic-grading-system\">Guardian<\/a> carried a welcome story at the weekend about an alternative [or, in the first instance, a complement] to university degree classification through the higher education achievement report (HEAR). \u00a0 The report begins:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Every university in the country will be asked to adopt a new detailed electronic record of a student's achievement to replace the \"blunt instrument\" of the traditional first, second or third-class honours degrees.\u00a0 The new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/education\/higher-education\">higher education<\/a> achievement report (HEAR), which gives an in-depth portrayal of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/education\/students\">students<\/a>' abilities, will be rolled out nationally from next autumn after being trialled at 27 universities this year.\u00a0 Robert Burgess, vice-chancellor of Leicester University and head of a steering group that has co-ordinated the new approach to measuring student performance, said the ambition was to replace the current \"crude classification system\".\u00a0 Every university is being asked to take up the new system from next year to meet students' expectations of a better service in exchange for higher fees, Burgess said.
