Thanks to the NAEE<\/a> blog for spotting the latest missive<\/a> from the UN:\u00a0The Lazy Person\u2019s Guide to Saving the World<\/em>. \u00a0Laughably, this is a\u00a0guide to\u00a0how we\u00a0can all save the world, without even moving from the sofa. \u00a0As NAEE\u00a0notes, the UN\u00a0seems to have become a branch of the advertising industry \u2013 run by teens, I'd say, judging by the language. \u00a0It begins:<\/p>\n

End extreme poverty.\u00a0Fight inequality and injustice. \u00a0Fix climate change. \u00a0Whoa. \u00a0The Global Goals are important, world-changing objectives that will require cooperation among governments, international organizations and world leaders. \u00a0It seems impossible that the average person can make an impact. Should you just give up?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

No! \u00a0Change starts with you. Seriously. Every human on earth \u2014 even the most indifferent, laziest person among us \u2014 is part of the solution. \u00a0Fortunately, there are some super easy things we can adopt into our routines that, if we all do it, will make a big difference.<\/em><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve made it easy for you and compiled just a few of the many things you can do to make an impact.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Dear me. \u00a0There are three levels to this dangerous nonsense: things you can do ...<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. from your couch<\/li>\n
  2. at home, and<\/li>\n
  3. outside your house.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    It's dangerous, not because the things advocated are useless (far from it), but because it reinforces the pernicious myth that meaningful change will come most effectively from individuals \u2013 whether on the sofa or not.<\/p>\n

    Because of this, there's surely a need for a level 4 \u2013 things you can only do with others to bring about system changes. \u00a0It will be too much to hope that the UN will do this, but others\u00a0might.<\/p>\n
