{"id":6573,"date":"2016-01-26T07:48:08","date_gmt":"2016-01-26T07:48:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6573"},"modified":"2016-01-26T07:48:08","modified_gmt":"2016-01-26T07:48:08","slug":"bye-bye-to-the-hea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2016\/01\/26\/bye-bye-to-the-hea\/","title":{"rendered":"Bye Bye to the HEA?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A gloomy report in last week's <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/news\/higher-education-academy-hea-subscription-fees-to-double-for-most-universities\">THE<\/a> about the not quite market-ready HEA, now that it is increasingly bereft of taxpayer funding.<\/p>\n<p>Not only are institutional fees set to double, but academics will have to pay \"modest fees\" to be members, and Fellows will have to do some CPD (ie, training) to hold onto their status. \u00a0In future,\u00a0\u00a0large universities (those with &gt;\u00a030,000 fte\u00a0students) will need to pay \u00a365,000 if they want to accredit their CPD courses and have access to fellowships.<\/p>\n<p>The THE report ends:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\"<em>The\u00a0HEA\u2019s latest accounts, which were\u00a0published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heacademy.ac.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/downloads\/1_statutory_2014-15_financial_statement_-_master_17_nov_2.pdf\">recently<\/a>, show that the organisation made a loss of \u00a394,000 in 2014-15, compared with a surplus of \u00a31.57 million the previous year, mainly as a result of falling grant funding. \u00a0The organisation nearly halved its workforce, which now stands at 93, but missed its targets for increasing subscription and commercial income<\/em>.\"<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This looks like a slippery slope.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A gloomy report in last week's THE about the not quite market-ready HEA, now that it is increasingly bereft of taxpayer funding.
