{"id":6582,"date":"2016-02-03T07:56:30","date_gmt":"2016-02-03T07:56:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=6582"},"modified":"2016-02-03T07:56:54","modified_gmt":"2016-02-03T07:56:54","slug":"the-future-of-he-in-29-bullet-points","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2016\/02\/03\/the-future-of-he-in-29-bullet-points\/","title":{"rendered":"A future for Higher Education \u2013 in 29 bullet points"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Centre for Environmental Education [<a href=\"http:\/\/ceeindia.org\/cee\/index.html\">CEE<\/a>] in Ahmedabad held a <a href=\"http:\/\/ceeindia.org\/esdg\/\">conference<\/a> last month on Education as a Driver of Sustainable Development Goals, which produced a\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/ceeindia.org\/esdg\/PDF\/Conference%20Final%20Action%20January%2013,%202016.pdf\">plan<\/a>\u00a0for action, <\/em>of which more later, no doubt<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Another document also emerged from this meeting titled:\u00a0<em>Goal 4.3 Higher Education and TVET Recommendations<\/em>. \u00a0This is mosly bullet points, 29 of them, each embodying a moral instruction and beginning with an active verb:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>examine \u00a0\/ \u00a0recognise \u00a0\/ \u00a0utilise \u00a0\/ \u00a0assess \u00a0\/ \u00a0reorient \u00a0\/ \u00a0improve \u00a0\/ \u00a0 apply \u00a0\/ \u00a0develop \/ \u00a0increase \u00a0\/ \u00a0teach \u00a0\/ \u00a0 provide \u00a0\/ \u00a0utilise \u00a0\/ \u00a0enhance \u00a0\/ \u00a0respect \u00a0\/ \u00a0use \u00a0\/ \u00a0employ \u00a0\/ \u00a0offer \u00a0\/ \u00a0develop \u00a0\/ \u00a0empower \u00a0\/ \u00a0develop \u00a0\/ \u00a0collaborate \u00a0\/ \u00a0convene \u00a0\/ \u00a0utilise \u00a0\/ \u00a0revise \u00a0\/ \u00a0model \u00a0\/ \u00a0cultivate \u00a0\/ \u00a0establish \u00a0\/ \u00a0provide \u00a0\/ \u00a0integrate<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This list fails a simple rhetorical test: if you're going to do this, you should never repeat a verb. \u00a0Not that this doing so\u00a0would have made a difference, as no one who actually matters in the real world will get to read this. \u00a0It's safe to assume that these unremarkable recommendations will go largely, un-remarked.<\/p>\n<p>Here's a <a href=\"http:\/\/ceeindia.org\/esdg\/Goal%204.3.html\">link<\/a> to the meeting discussions about all this, although these recommendations are not there for some reason. \u00a0You'll find plenty of pics of conference sessions,\u00a0and other\u00a0links. \u00a0It seems that\u00a0more than\u00a0750 people\u00a0from 22 countries attended the event. \u00a0All that carbon ...<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Centre for Environmental Education [CEE] in Ahmedabad held a conference last month on Education as a Driver of Sustainable Development Goals, which produced a\u00a0plan\u00a0for action, of which more later, no doubt.
